Art World Project is an ambitious European-initiated project made possible only by the Internet. The vision is to develop a unique work of art with 50,400 contributions from artists all around the world, and upon completion, the artwork will be printed on a 3m by 10.5m canvas and net profits from the project will be donated to several children's charity organisations. Artists can get in touch and collaborate with each other through the internet platform, and the idea is that by having the contribution of an artist from Austria next to another from Australia or Nepal, art and cultural exchange will be inspired.
For Art World Project's Shanghai event, which happens this Friday at Art Labor on Yongjia Lu, three well-established artists, photographer Heungman Kwan from Hong Kong/New York, sculptor and mixed-media installation artist Rita Portugal Lima from Portugal/Macau (who was part of an amazing multi-dimensional art show at Shangai Studio late last year), and applied artist David Dieter of San Francisco set aside four months of their busy schedules for this project. They were given a common theme to work together to create unique works of art for the event, and having seen first-hand some of the artworks being made ourselves, we say this will be one show to watch.
All proceeds from the Shanghai event will be donated to the Jiaobus project, an innovative and groundbreaking project that involves a big bus outfitted with high-tech teaching tools and volunteer teachers which is driven around the poorest parts of rural China, to inspire English-language learning among children and young adults, thus giving them a chance at better jobs, higher education and cultural exchange.
