Oftentimes when I do pick up Chinese non-fiction in China is when it is first released, because when someone re-reads it then it gets pulled from the shelves. Let it go, Littleme. They are not reasonable people, and despite the satisfaction that comes from poking holes in their flimsy facsimile of logic it won't accomplish anything. They're too far gone. I'd recommend Susan Shirk's new book, "China: Fragile Superpower" for anyone trying to come to grips with the personalities we've seen trolling Shanghaiist and the rest of the world's media. She's a really respected Sinologist out of Stanford, and the basic contention in her book is that despite China's many and growing strengths, China is in actuality a very unstable country, and not for the usual reasons you might think like income disparity, environmental degradation, or inflation. I'm only a 100 pages in, but she's almost entirely focused her time on the rampant nationalism that's found in the young, primarily student population. It is so extreme and virulent that it forces the government into policy decisions they would rather not have to choose because they feel if they look weak towards Japan, Taiwan or the United States (the three countries where most of the hate is directed) then the young nationalists will take to the streets demanding a stronger government. The irony is that one of her early conclusions is that much of the anger that gets directed towards outside countries is actually misplaced aggression about the internal situation in China. Like how poor rednecks in America blame Muslims or blacks for their own crappy lives. I'd be willing to bet that all of the vitriolic posters on this site are poor students probably stressing about their terrible prospects in this new dog-eat-dog China, and West-bashing is an way to vent, since they can't complain about anything inside China without inviting down the party's wrath. From Shirk's book, page 61: "A PLA general candidly suggested that the students demonstrated against foreign targets to express their domestic discontents. 'Demonstrations after the Belgrade embassy bombing or against Japan aren't really about foreign policy. They are the result of an accumulation of people's grievances against the China government, just the same as in the Qing dynasty and the Republican government. They are not really anti-foreign. Demonstrations on foreign policy actually reflect domestic politics." Also from Shirk's book, page 98: "I asked a Chinese think-tank expert why China couldn't ignore the many small slights against the People's Republic made by Taiwanese figures. He sighed and said: 'We are the hostages to our own propaganda. Our propaganda makes it hard for us not to react when Taiwan or the US do things. People don't know anything about the world that isn't filtered through the Chinese media." Sound like anyone we know?

Do you know that these improvements were not shared by other similar groups around the world over the same time period? Are you certain that these very basic improvements are not related to an overall improvement in living standards in many places around the world as a result of improving technology? Have you accounted for immigration and changing demographics? The truth is, that it's highly possible that the Tibetans would have achieved such gains (or better) without Chinese involvement, and as I see it, you are simply using a small piece of information to fit the conclusion of your misleading argument. It's not such a simple world, unfortunately. In any event, it's obvious that no one likes to be subjugated to outsiders, and no statistics will change what people really want. Obviously the metrics you cite really don't address the real issue.
