Chinese hackers strike again; another CNN website down

Hot off the press: a CNN-affiliated website The Sports Network (also http://sport.si.cnn.com) has just been hacked by a group called HackCNN, and this was the message placed by the hackers on the website:
Chinese hackers strike again; another CNN website down

The Sports Network seems to have regained control of the website in the meanwhile, and here is the message we now find on their homepage:

Please Note

The Sports Network website and other major news sites have been hacked by a political entity from China, and as a result are temporarily unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope to be back up and running as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

CNN is bearing the brunt of widely-held perceptions among the Chinese masses as the evilest of a western media hell-bent on tearing China apart and spoiling its coming out party otherwise known as the Olympics. Sina has now even devoted an entire mini-site on its BBS that has a banner which screams, "Rise up in anger against the demonisation of the Tibet incident! Chinese netizens fire away at CNN and other western media!" Imagethief has the scoop:
sina-anti-cnn.jpg

UPDATE: Looks like several bloggers and ourselves were a bit confused. The Sports Network is not a CNN-owned website. Although the site itself is relatively small, s TechCrunch reveals, attracting just 264,000 visitors in February 2008 (Comscore, worldwide), it also powers parts of other large sports sites such as CNN/SI, and as such http://sports.si.cnn.com, was also down.

Well, that's bad. I think there is some value in CNN...

and sina.com's ass is not clean. And if hacking other legal websites is about Criminal Law... what sina.com doing could be abetting.

Oh, right. is Grabbing the torch voilence and illegal as well?

So how does this play out China? Today is "evil foreign forces conspiring to split China and supress our rise as a nation". 4 months from now will it be a 180 turn to "welcome foreign friends, see our beautiful modern city and shining smiles?" What will the Chinese spectators due when a US/French/or Brit athlete wins a gold and their national athem plays?

hehe. funny. nationalism unleashed. why only cnn? what about nytimes, fox, etc.? only bad thing is this shows how powerful cnn is, otherwise they wouldn't bother. for example, no one (internationally speaking) gives a shit about what the chinese press says because most just assume it's bullshit.

being proud of something that you have no control over is kinda stupid. proud to be chinese or american or whatever. you don't control who your parents are or where you are born. pride should be reserved for personal or collective accomplishments such as raising a healthy/happy child, etc.

i'm glad so many weakhearts are wasting their time on this, less bothering of good people.

nationalism: the most revolting human characteristic.

民族主义:人最恶心的特点

do you guys even read what the hackers said that you can find on the screen shot above? hacking is not right, i admit but don't twist it that we Chinese hate foreign, we just don't like people telling us what is right and wrong, we can think for ourselves. this is so typical western elitist thinking that our way or not way. and we don't like people spread lies about us. also, we don't give a damn about the Chinese media either.

How about the Japanese sweeping all three metals in an event? Like kung fu.

no problem, if they win that only means we need to practice more. it's a competitive sport, you need to push yourself hard before you can be on the top.

Why CNN? Because they are "goons and thugs."

to stinky mutton(nanheyangrouchuan):
Kung fu is not an event of Olympics. You talk like an idiot. you are just another American redneck. Go home. study more

Well, that nicely worded message is going to brighten the Chinese even more in the eyes of the international community. Good job on that one and good luck in the upcoming olympics...I think you will need it from the looks of it.

richardlee, i don't think he's an American redneck and don't curse at him. just ignore him. and I think China has been trying to make kung fu an Olympic event. so you never know when it will become one hehe. i hope it will.

to beijingist,

i condemn the hackers action because it causes lost of private property. and no, it is not because CNN is "goon and thug." it is because it is an easy target and it is because it sometimes reports distorted news, widens culture gap and fuels nation opposition. And yes, Chinese media is even worse, but they are not reputable and nobody take them seriously.

Personally I look to Computer Hackers for all my political opinions.

to littleme,

i think we don't need luck, we just need to work hard and be modest, let the world judge whether or not it is successful or not.

us and them.

who is us? are you a member of the government or the domestic police? do you identify personally with the police and the government?

you are you, and you are too insignificant (according to them) for either your own government or cnn to criticize you.

western elitist thinking? elitists are people who think they are better than others. you don't have to look overseas to find them. i don't think there is such a thing as western thinking or chinese thinking. those categories are too exclusive and very broad, you could never define what they mean because there are so many counter examples.

when i think of 'us' i think of all people, when i think of 'them' i think of all governments and military (not the solders personally.) while the political and economic elites stir up the emotions of the people it is not the people who benefit but the elites. workers are the casualties of war on both sides while the elites reap the benefits. i have more in common with a Chinese farmer than i do with an American politician or CEO.

nationalism is just an instrument of social control.

Oh sega, if the world was only judging China on its hard work and modesty then of course you wouldnt have to rely on luck. But of course, the world will be judging China on everything else, so you will need all the luck you can get. Rather than sending text messages out to rally people to join the French boycott, you should text people and tell them to only wear the color red from now until the start of the olympics. That way you will be guaranteed to have a successful olympics cuz the color red promotes good luck. I know it may be wishful thinking but at this point you really have to start grasping at straws.

to skaching
of course it all comes down to us and them, it always is, this world is not the utopia that you want it to be. look at this site, you see the huge cultural gaps that it is only going to be even more wide because people like winterfalling, nanheyangrouchuan and a few others post nothing but pure hatred for each other. I like people, I like food, I like game, but I don't like people judging others without first get to know others. western elitist do exist. the elitist thinking do exist in China as well, but they have fundamental differences. in China, the elitist thinking is driven by social status like money, and power. but the western elitist thinking is about "we are better nation than the others", "we are the greatest", "we have the best social system and everybody should have what we have", this is the thinking that i am talking about. it is like an American solider hand a candy bar to an Iraqi child, the solider might think it is friendly, but the child might think it is demeaning. all nations are equal, the only difference is how advanced is their civilization. maybe i am a geek, but try to watch some Star Trek: The next generation. They often offer some great points on dealing with out civilizations. and i agree that you are more like a chinese farmer than anything else in anywhere. as a matter of fact, we are all the same, we are the unit, the base of the society and we share a common value.

to littleme,
no, we don't need luck. luck never change a thing. what we need is time, we need the time to have a peaceful and health reform that without any interrupt. Olympic is something for the world to see that we too love everything that everybody else loves. get to know us, don't see us as an amusement park. i still remember 18 years ago when some foreign tourist came into my long tang and filming me brush my teeth at the public sink. can i have some privacy please? do i look like an animal to you? if only then i speak english.

All this attention aimed at CNN just helps CNN by giving them more coverage. Way to go! Also, please improve your English.

@sega8800
"i still remember 18 years ago when some foreign tourist came into my long tang and filming me brush my teeth at the public sink. can i have some privacy please? do i look like an animal to you? if only then i speak english"

yeah well, if I had a kuai for everytime a Chinese person took a picture of me just because Im "foreign" looking, Id be rolling in money. can I have some privacy please? do I look like an animal?

People are curious of the unknown, not everything is a personal attack on the Chinese nation

nation to nation relations are a myth, the only thing we have is personal realtions, but it seems they are being swept under the door mat as politics comes into play

I just dont like hackers. but for the Olimpics China is going to hold and the pointing-fingers, i would say, fuck the Olimpics and fuck them. Who cares when they think Tibet should get splitted from China, are they still friends>? Yes, you can think whatever you want but do not fart in my house, either get out or get your ass kicked. fuck the game.

I think a lot of Chinese also misjudge the importance of CNN. CNN is not an "official" news network. It is just a standard media agency. It is big in the US, but this doesn't give it any significantly more prominent position on reporting news. The misinterpretation that CNN is some kind of central news network is only because CNN takes a more national focus within the US, and reports a larger share of international news. Other news agencies in the US combined far exceed CNN in terms of watchers.

Internationally, CNN is still a distant second to the BBC.

Furthermore, if you wanted to find a more biased American station, you could go with Fox News. Although to be quite honest, the bias of CNN or even Fox pales in comparison to the bias of most Chinese news organisations on hot-button topics. Take Taiwan for example. Chinese news organisations regularly only cite pro-KMT politicians and pundits and completely ignore pro-DPP ones. Chinese stations are experts at only considering one side of certain issues, including Tibet. The Tibetan people have voices too, you know.

taih !

your surprisingly low level of intelligence beyond a normal human being gets on my nerves !!

what are you trying to say, you fuck !?
you are trying to lower down the CNN world's profile in exchange to ease of people's acuse of its being bias !

you jerks, we don't buy this shiet !

there is also no need for your reminder, most of the chinese knew media in china is bias anyway. People knew to take cautious of what it says ! Un-like the CNN !

tailhanasie

when are you going to wake up and admit the wrong doing on your side !

are you gonna make you happy we agreed that the recent issues are 100% wrong on the Chinese side ?!

Gives up a break ! JERK

it is frustructing to be reasoning with igroants like you and your group !

"are you gonna make you happy we agreed that the recent issues are 100% wrong on the Chinese side ?! "

Oh, it's you again. No, tommylee, I will be happy when you can admit that Chinese DO have some degree of blame in the situation. I don't expect for anyone to admit 100 percent of blame because that would not be right. Complicated problems like Tibet and Taiwan have enough blame to apportion for all sides. This is one reason why they are so hard to solve. I see the problem with many Chinese as not that they must accept ALL blame. It is just that they must admit that SOME blame exists, and then take part in a rational discussion with all parties.

It is one of life's lessons to learn that there are few problems where one person or party is entirely blameless.

to Jeff
huh? please try to learn chinese if you live in china or if you are interested in china!
chinese has been working very hard to learn english, the tool to communicate. but very few westerners learn chinese, what do u think ? communication needs two ways!
