Having recently trumped the US as the world's number one carbon emitter, China has a long way to go to be considered an environmental role model. But today, on Earth Day, we have high hopes for clear skies ahead. Cough, cough.

Shanghai Daily recently reported of the city's ambition to be a national model environmental city before World Expo 2010. And thanks to the impending Olympics, Beijing is trying to clear the air as well. No smoking in daycare centers will be a start.
China’s State Council has put a nationwide ban on free plastic bags in all stores as of June 1st. China squanders away 37 million barrels of crude oil on plastic bag production every year, and according to the Daily Mail uses more plastic bags than any other country. So, it looks like reusable bags will be the season's MUST-have fashion accessory.
Ikea has had its big yellow ones for a while now. Carrefour is (L)ing China with their own reusable bag as well. You can pick up an "I'm Not A Plastic Bag" in any of the fake markets around town. Muji and other boutiques are pushing their own trendier fold-and-carry takes on the idea.
Today, on Earth Day, Mihela Hladin of Greennovate is launching her own reusable bag to support GECKO (Greennovate Environmental Challenge for Kids Outreach), an environmental awareness program for kids in rural China. "The program encourages kids to understand their environmental responsibility today to improve their quality of life tomorrow," says Mihela. All proceeds from bag sales go to GECKO. The plan is to have companies buy the bags on behalf of their employees as an environmental initiative.
