The price of a pint in China

drinks.jpgWe're always on the look out for a cheap pint, because we're tight and like a drink purely as a service to you dear reader. Unfortunately, unless you like sharing your table with overly friendly bar staff and/or cockroaches, finding a decent beer that doesn't hurt your wallet can some times be a little tricky in this city. It'll come as no surprise for you to learn then that when it comes to buying a pint of beer, Shanghai currently sits at the top of the average price table for China.

This, according to newly launched pint price comparison site, pintprice.com, is how things look for China at the moment:

Shanghai 35.14RMB ($5.02 USD/£2.52GBP)
Foshan 22.74RMB ($3.25USD/£1.63GBP)
Beijing 15.39RMB ($2.2USD/£1.1GBP)
Chengdu 14.90RMB ($2.13USD/£1.07GBP)
Yangshou 9.66RMB ($1.38USD/£0.69GBP)
Jinan 2.8RMB ($0.4USD/£0.2GBP)
Xi'an 0RMB ($0USD/£0GBP)

Now, Shanghaiist hasn't been to Xi'an in a little while, but last time we were there we don't remember the beers being free, so we're guessing that this is a system error (not to knock the integrity of the site but we did learn of it via The Sun after all).

On average, they reckon a pint in China will set you back 17.93RMB ($2.56/£1.29), which might not be the cheapest in the world (a beer in Somalia will cost you a mere 3RMB on average) but it sure beats drinking in Monaco, where you'll have to fork out around 105RMB for a pint. Yikes!

Naturally, we'll keep tirelessly scouring our fair city on your behalf for a cheap drink that doesn't come with a cheap atmosphere but, in the meantime, let's all go to Jinan!

I'm going to Jinan on Tuesday and had been feeling pretty bad about it until now. Thanks for cheering me up.

I've been to Monaco and they speak the truth.

If you ever want to feel poor, I suggest going on a camping trip to Nice and taking a day trip to Monte Carlo wearing shorts and a Spice Girls t-shirt.
