Actor John Cusack spotted at Shanghai's MAO and Bar Rouge

Shanghaiist spotted John Cusack at Bar Rouge on Friday. Ensconced in the bathroom-sized VIP room on the club's terrace and guarded by a bevy of beefy bodyguards, Cusack was playing with his phone and appeared both tired and bored (who recommended BR anyway?). Doing the rounds of Shanghai nightspots, he was spotted at MAO the night before until the wee hours.

John Cusack in Shanghai, ChinaThe American actor of High Fidelity fame, is presently in town shooting Shanghai, a period drama with Gong Li set in Shanghai during World War II directed by Mikael Hafstrom. In the film, Cusack plays an American who returns to Japanese-occupied Shanghai in 1941 just months before Pearl Harbor to discover that his friend has been killed. While investigating the murder, he falls for the Gong Li character and uncovers a secret that his own government is hiding.

Someone should recommend a good, old-fashioned pub for the man. Shanghaiist would like to take John for a pint at The Beaver, just a short walk on Yueyang Lu from MAO . So if you have his agent's contact details, hook us up. For a pint ... ahem.

He clearly didn't check the contributors' bar recommendations then. I'm sure he would have loved C's

Mr. Cusack really should give MAO another chance this coming Friday, May 2nd for the dIRTYePIC party. It's going to be really, really good.

Hope for his sake he went with what's on his left hand and not his right.

I would just like to say that if Jennifer Anniston is ever in town and fancies a sausage roll, I would be honored to take her up the British Bulldog.

My friend told me that he had to give his table to John Cusack and he said John Cusack was indifferent and seemed that he didn't want to come. My friend was pissed off at him.

By the way the film was blocked from filming in Shanghai at first and then I guess there was a comprise then.

I love your terminology: "the Gong Li character". I don't think I have ever seen her used as an adjective. She does play a lot of similar, dramatic roles though so I guess her name can describe a few things :)

Gong Li's character would be the "Gorgeous woman". Fits her.
BTW Shanghai is not filming in Shanghai. It will be London and Bangkok I read recently.
Cusack is a ladies man for sure.

Well, that plus Gong Li is actually going to be in the movie.

Is "High Fidelity" the best Shanghaiist could come up with? What about those mid 80s classics (one with Demi Moore)?

Ain't that a shame when people be throwin' away a perfectly good white boy?

@ nanheyangrouchuan: I really enjoyed "High Fidelity." It stands out as my favorite of the roles that Cusack plays.

I didn't have a TV in the 80s, so missed out on those classics you mention.

@ taihanasie and James: the "Gong Li character" reference was no stab at Gong Li. I merely meant that she is the love interest that gets the hero. I didn't mean that she always plays the same character (or that the character in the movie is based on Gong Li). I have never even seen one of her movies.

having or not having a television in the 80s wouldn't be much of an impediment to seeing movies that John Cusack stars in. I mean, we actually went to movie theaters then . . .just sayin'.

(I have never even seen one of her movies.)

Talk about deprived.
John you lucky buggar.

(left to right) no, maaaybe, Cusack, definately, definately

You'll pull more chicks if you learn to spell...
