From Associated Press: "A group of protesters planning to protest the Olympic torch relay in Hong Kong have been barred from entering the city, local media and activists say. They were questioned at the airport and put on a flight to London." (April 27)
From France24: "The Olympic torch is travelling from its historic home in Olympia, Greece, to the Chinese capital Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games. Watch our special report on its relay around the globe."
From France24: "China has started a massive campaign of investment in mineral exploitation in Africa and is keeping blind about the humanitarian problems."

Week Around the Ists

The vast majority of HK residents in a recent survey are against using the Olympics to bash China. http://www.thestandard.com.hk/news_detail.asp?we_cat=2&art_id=64632&sid=18554785&con_type=1&d_str=20080418&fc=8

Yep... it's definitely you....
watchdvd all day !
anything you want to say bad about China today ??
we are waiting....
Another product of the moribund Chinese education system. The site takes a few seconds to load a comment and this little fenqing starts moaning about being "banned".
China is a bad, dirty country that is molesting Africa as it criticizes the West for its past wrongs in that continent. Why ship a whole boat load of arms directly to Mugabe? Why is China selling bombers and tanks to the Khartoum regime? Those starving, dehydrated black Sudanese are a such a big threat to Chinese oil wells?
Let the Japanese burn the Forbidden City!
You're doing just fine on your own, champ.
yeah..keepp watching your DVD !
nanhey

Can you say something different, for god sake !
If you want to insult a country, make it an interesting posting for ppls to read ! I can almost fell asleep reading your post !!
Leeli,
i agree with you, some articles on this site are biased. but, considering they are expats, they just want to feel good of themselves. let them happy, and let them indulge in this self-happiness. this is one aspect of our harmony society.
Meanwhile, i assume those expats who live in Shanghai not only read this website, also read Chinadaily/Shanghai Star, and watch Chinese TV news etc. So, let us assume they are righteous and still have the ability to make judgement.
as we all know, most of expats in Shanghai are nice and quite reasonable, so maybe we had better not use those strong words here on argument.
and, to remind you, always avoid to respond to Nanheyangrouchan, he is a very strange person here, need special care...
i don't understand why there is such fear of protests. there are protests at all Olympics. there were many in Athens etc. just let people say what they want to say, there is no threat to the events or Chinese people's feelings. unless your feelings can be hurt by people disagreeing with you. in which case it might be helpful to realize that people have a natural right to think and say what they want, government restricts those rights at its own peril. people world wide love freedom of speech, movement, assembly, the press, etc.
a little healthy debate about government policy is long overdue.
anger is not the way to deal with this situation. people just need to calm down and realize that if you are calm and approach the situation with thoughtfulness and try to understand other people's ideas, everything will be fine. there is no need to make this issue about China vs. "the west" because that isn't really true, there were protests in South Korea as well.
Protests are a natural and good way for people to express themselves without having to use violence. if you let people release their feelings through expression, speech, art, etc., they are more likely to attempt to solve problems through peaceful discussion rather than feel like they have no option but to become violent.
a harmonious society is very desirable, if a little vague.
however, isn't a truly harmonious society, where people are allowed to disagree peacefully, better than a society where a slogan version of harmony is protected through state repression of dissent?
Just like democracy can't be spread by force (see u.s. mid-east policy) harmony can't be achieved through coercion, throwing dissenters in jail and demonizing those who don't share your opinions.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH (guaranteed in the constitution of the People's Republic of China) IS FOR PEOPLE YOU DON'T AGREE WITH, otherwise, it isn't freedom of speech but exactly the opposite.
wow, skatching, is insult a sort of freedom of speech?
is fabricate news a sort of free press
you are brainwashed by your media's secret propganda disgused as objectivery and impartiality for too long.
