Set back from the junction of XinLe Lu and XiangYang Lu, opposite a blue-domed Russian Orthodox Church stands the Mansion Hotel.
A limestone building in manicured grounds, this place gives off the same whiff of 1920’s luxury that you see in the grand old financial institutions of the Bund; if you like Hamilton House you’ll love this place.
On the fifth and highest floor, the Mansion Veranda restaurant is one of the nicest terraces in the city, all ice buckets, crisp white linen, ladies who lunch, and views over the French Concession.
The menu on the terrace is all set for the Summer: Mussels in a curry sauce (48RMB), Caesar Salad (58RMB), Ahi Tuna with Wasabi Panna Cotta (128RMB).
Although the size of the main courses is a little tight considering the price (especially once they tack on that 15% hotel tax), the other portions were decent, and all of the food was fresh and delicious.
We left happy and we full of the joys of Spring at having found a tucked-away gem.
