Green Scene: Ever seen a trash wall?

Ever seen a trash wall?In honor of Science and Environment Day today (Saturday), Sagevision and the Ruijin Community Cultural Center, are erecting a ‘Community Trash Art Mural’ in Fuxing Park. They aim to “create public awareness and interest regarding the impact of trash on the environment in China and the world.”

Shanghaiist has diligently been washing our plastic and metal trash and storing it for this big day. Participants will watch a short video on a product’s life cycle and then glue a piece of garbage to the wall (If you grab a red ginger ale can, that's Shanghaiist’s!). The exhibition is designed to help people "see trash with new eyes".

The wall will be on display from 9am to 5pm if you want to join!

Some trash trivia:
The average American throws away 4.5 pounds of trash a day.
That styrofoam cup that you drank your coffee out of this morning will still be in the landfill 500 years from now.
A 60-watt incandescent light bulb will last about 750 hours, compared to 7,500 to 10,000 hours that a compact fluorescent bulb which generates the same light.
75,000 trees must be cut to provide paper for one edition of the Sunday New York Times. (Time to sign up for the online version!)
One quart of motor oil can pollute 250,000 gallons of water.
Americans throw away 570 diapers per second. That's 49 million diapers per day.
The standard formula used to calculate the amount of waste generated from a restaurant is 1.5 lbs per meal served.
Almost 1/3 of the waste generated in America is packaging.
