Mutant.Jedi- why 3 days?
Why not 5 days?
Are we not sad enough for the 10s of thousands of victims that we can't spend 8 days mourning for them?
Why can't we take 2 weeks out of our lives to think of them?
How long is enough?

My point is that setting some arbitrary period where we can't do arbitrary things means nothing. If you're going to make something compulsory, how about a tax to help the victims, or a mandatory blood drive?
At least that would have an effect.

It is the digital equivalent of sackcloth and ashes. What's wrong with that?

While these three days pass slowly for the gamers and celebrity addicts, Imagine those that are trapped in the rubble during that period. How quickly will their day pass?

So is it just and online / broadcast thing or are bars, restaurants, nightclubs, live music, playing Mah Jong in the park, pink barber shops, DVD sellers etc. all going to stop for a while?

Even in the states, there would be some sort of moment of mourning for something major. Granted the networks aren't state-run, but they'll generally follow the same suit.

This is not FOR the victims but out of respect for the 50,000 dead (when it's all said and done). This earthquake killed about ten times as many people as 9/11 in absolute terms and twice as many people in relative terms (as proportion of the population).

It is true that in other countries Internet is usually left alone (TV is regulated), but not so in China, and this is no news.

that is crazy- how will shutting down video and game websites for three days do a single thing for victims of the earthquake?

It's the digital equivalent of sackcloth and ashes.

Tudou, Youku, have quake videos on frontpage, their other vids still accessible. AP and Reuters have some updates, including on Sina. (blogged about it here)
