CNNIC Report: 160 million Internauts in China do AV

How does — 160 million pairs of eyeballs — sound to you? 160 million Chinese Internauts do audio and video on the Internet. (That's the latest report in from CNNIC, China's Network Info Center.)

The writing on the wall: The AV web's active and competitive, but is also pretty optimistic; diversification and integration are what's to be expected.

Of note:

  • The high number of AV netizens can be accredited to the mass availability of broadband Internet. (It's no longer the CHINANET modem dial-up days of 1997.)
  • China now has four main types of AV sites: AV sharing, portal AV, Internet TV and Internet AV downloads.
  • Those who do AV often earn more than the average Chinese surfer.
  • 44.7% of AV netizens are women (compare that to "just" 42.7% of total women surfers in China).
  • Those who watch AV on the Web earn more: 30% earn more than CNY 2,000 (compare that to just 26% for the entire Net population).
  • Of those who watch video on the Web, movies and TV series are really big: they account for 86.3% of all viewed AV content.

This is the first-ever CNNIC AV report. Interestingly enough, ranks were done away with: CNNIC folks said that disclosing such figures might be "too sensitive".

Too inharmonious as well, maybe?
