Windows Underground: Hipsters welcome

Anyone who's into rock knows that Windows Underground is the most reliable place to hear good live music at the weekend right now. The new Nanjing Xi Lu venue took the baton from Tembo as Windows' live messenger (arf!) a few months ago and has been packing them in from day one.

During the week there is still the occasional band, but Underground has enough space and seats to be a comfortable bar / club to just hang out and listen to people playing some records (as opposed to DJs).

Last Thursday night saw the first monthly "Mod Dance Party" (named after the 1960s youth culture that swept the UK look it up, squares). Garage, Ska and Motown sounds rocked the decks, there were plenty of people going for the sharp suit and mini dress look, and a solid dancefloor turnout from about 11pm onwards- the night was a midweek breath of fresh air.

Tomorrow night (Thursday) is the turn of "Dance Music For Hipsters": ex-Shanghaiist contributor Aric Queen's night of obscure rock music. For anyone who can't face another night of the Black Eyed Peas or 3 year old house music any indie stuff is bound to be a treat; and with free entrance and 10-25RMB drinks, this place could become a habit.

you're very keen on this,huh?

"Windows' live messenger" ... well played.

This is a beautiful thing to see. Diversity is music is, in my opinion, the key...or should I say diversity in good tunes. Nowadays I've found music to be more a relative thing than not. I like the pop/hip-pop and the 3 year old house dis's, I dig the rock 'n roll tip, mad love for the indie rock...but where's the rest? Break out the subgenres...'house' is no longer a sufficient desciption of electronic music, right?
