hongkongnese is just cantonnese.

Nope. While we have close ties with our Cantonese cousins right across the border and we are very proud of being of Cantonese heritage, we are also proud of being Hongkies - and having a dual Chinese/Western upbringing, which is obviously something the citizens of Guangdong do not have.

I question these poll results, but will admit that my opinion may not reflect the current attitudes of "the kids"

I think there is an assumption in the article that is a common mistake. And that is Chinese = PRoC or Mainland Chinese.

A distinction needs to be made between Chinese and PRoC. Hong Kongers who "now identify themselves as Chinese or Chinese Hong Kong citizens." don't necessarily mean that they associate themselves with PRC Chinese. And I don't believe that a "significant growth of PRC patriotism" is a reasonable conclusion.

Are these Hong Kongers of Chinese descent mainlanders who moved to HK or are they born and raised Hong Kongers?

Hong Kong's relation to China is highly complex and at times paradoxical.

A huge portion of the so-called nationalistic patriots of Hong Kong hold foreign passports and - until fairly recently - a majority of the population was made up of people who had actually fled mainland China.

There may be tremendous pride in the rise of China among Hong Kong residents, but the underlying suspicion of China remains strong.

Look at the size of the T- men commemoration each June.
