Ah, 80's music. No, we don't mean that 80's music. We mean Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy inventing new art forms at dueling nightclubs in Chicago. From their respective perches at The Warehouse and The Music Box, these pioneers of music transformed soul, disco, R&B, and funk into what's now known as house music.
Midway through the 80's, many Chicago DJs and clubgoers started experimenting with creating their own rhythm tracks. DJs would play these homemade tracks, and (in short) this is how house music was born. Hardy was no exception, often getting the hottest acetates and tapes. A roll-call of major Chicago producers including Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Phuture's DJ Pierre and Chip E. all debuted their compositions at The Music Box.
On Thursday July 17th, local 4/4 hooligans Void bring these styles of sound to The Shelter. The event features Nat "Pumpmaster" Alexander, Shanghai "Sureshot" Shultra, Santo "Freakin" Shino, and The Aquatic Acid Kid, Zoomin' Fish Zhao. It's a flashback you'll never forget, especially if you've never jacked your body before.
It's a soul thing; a spiritual thing.
Thursday July 17th: "Box" at The Shelter, located at 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Xi Lu (永福路5号,近复兴西路). 10 RMB gets you in the door starting at 10 PM.

Good stuff Ryan. Hope you'll excuse a slight correction - Hardy certainly played a bit of "that" 80's music. I understand there might also be some Yazoo, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Yello.
Why people in Shanghai care about Chicago music history? Ah I forgot that insatiable effect of novelty has on humans..
