You too can help make fast food faster

<McDonald's in Shanghai ChinaWith the world looking at China leading up to the Games, China continues to make a concerted effort to meet the social standards of Western developed countries. In addition to public service announcements teaching people to be civil to each other, the powers that be (in this case the Jing'an Municipality) have have even gone as far as launching a volunteer guerrilla campaign to bribe people with small gifts to clear their tables at McDonald's and KFC.

The Shanghai Daily reports;

The newspaper found that most KFC and McDonald's customers at outlets along Nanjing Road W. don't take garbage to trash bins before leaving.

However, 40 out of 50 people said they were willing to clear their table before leaving.

What will be next, teaching people that pyjama's are only to be worn in doors?

It's summer now so people are sleeping outside at night. Guess they need to wear pajamas.

Not sure what they do in the home, but when wearing pajamas on the streets, most Shanghainese have underwear on beneath. I suppose they don't want anything peaking through, but it kind of defeats the purpose of wearing pajamas.

Totally agree, I think Shanghai would be an incredible boring and uncharachteristic city if it weren't for those special behaviours like those mentioned.

I love that Shanghai-ers (as opposed to Shanghainese) wear their jammies on HuaiHai Zhong Lu, Play cards and have dinner on the side of the street. It really creates part of the charm and character of the city.

Even back in Sydney when I lived downtown I'd roam around in what a slept in cos this was my neighbourhood and y'all coming in for your Sunday Brunch are just tourists.

It's just a shame you don't see enough paisley and satin.

when i visited UK,found most brits didnot take trash to bin in McD and KFC, are brits not civil?

pls donot use USA standard to judge allover the world!

For local people who live in citycenter apartment, they wear pajama to buy newspaper or throw away rubish 10~20 meters away from their home, why they must change to formal clothes? do you USA guys wear jacket everymorning when you open your HOUSE door to get newspaper from mailbox in front of garden?

Chinese believe the neighborhood area is the 'garden'

it is not nice to wear pajama in department store/cinema or other commercial area, but pls donot be shock if you see locals walking down lanes w pajama, they are walking in their 'garden'

as far as the pajama does not have see-through effect, it is perfectly OK.

hoho this is china'rule, actually many expats don't take garbage to trash bins before leaving as usual, so that is exactly what we called:go native! hoho bloody interesting!

hey I wear my pajamas also in public back in university, NYCity, L.A. etc...its all good and totally comfy I match mine too :)

Staff at McD's tend to get annoyed if you self-bus - see Chinkerfly's answer above. I'm more than happy to - I just do what is proper in the country that I'm in. Bus/Self-bus - it's not much more work.

I wore pajamas to pretty much 70% of my classes my freshman year of college, so I don't see the big deal either.

I remember back in 2002 when I first visited China I tried to take my trash to the trashcan like we do in the U.S. and a girl who's job presumably was to clear off tables ran after me, looking shocked and appalled at my behavior, just before taking the tray from me.

If everyone starts clearing away their own trash and throwing trash into proper trashcans instead of just on the sidewalk, there will be quite a few people without jobs in China. :P

On another note, is wearing pajamas outside really any worse than wearing sweats around in public? Pajamas are comfy, and considerably cooler than sweatpants in the summer.
