Olympic terrorists arrested in Shanghai
Police said yesterday they had cracked down on a Shanghai terrorist cell planning violence at Olympic soccer matches in the city. Shanghai’s Olympic security office head Cheng Jiulong said police, who were put on “crisis” level several days ago, had learned of several international terrorist organizations and staged raids successful in arresting potential attackers. Information not mentioned in Jiulong's report included how many people were arrested, when they were taken into custody and where they are being held.
This latest terrorist scare comes just after the Kunming bus bombing earlier this week, a case that remains mysterious — is it in any way tied to the Olympics? What was that weird text message about? Looming in the background is the police killing of five alleged Uyghur terrorists in Urumqi earlier in this month, which was followed by the government’s announcement that it has detained 82 suspect terrorists in the northwest part of China this past year.
Authorities in Beijing have repeatedly warned of the dangers of violence at the games, especially from Muslims in Xinjiang. Shanghai police have amped up security measures for Olympic soccer matches, patrolling Shanghai Stadium heavily and planning random identity checks throughout the city. We’ll have to see how the skeptics who denounced the PRC’s trigger-happy response in Urumqi feel about Shanghai’s own under-documented case of potential Olympic violence.

Hey, can I buy an "alleged" for that headline? Shanghaiist servers are offshore and should host content that lives up to a modicum of journalistic objectivity, yeah? Or you guys just mouthpiecin'?

Yeah, the propoganda being spread around right now by the Chinese media (and Shanghai/China daily, of course) is peppered with vague, unspecific references to all the security issues that the authorities are bustin' up, the people from Xinjiang who were planning bad stuff, etc...
China really is learning from the US. A good helping of fear and a perceived enemy is a great tool to get people to support the authorities and behave themselves.

To T,
---"Either that or become so fed up they vote the current government and cronies out of power. (please please please)"?
You dont need to "please". Even with a "demon-crazy election" your style, CCP will win outlandish. Too sad for your sort? Check PEW made by very very white man, lol!

As proven by the Bush administration, this quote seems appropriate:
"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

Eastman you really need to work in your deduction skills. Im not talking about china but rather another country with awful government - only with the hope of citizen led replacement. Hint: elections are coming up and we've had the worst president in nearly 230some odd years of nationhood for the last years. You really need to lay off the thin skin, everyone bashes china, boo hol china is victimized act.

Don't be so naive cynical people, there ARE terrorists in this world, and they DO blow things up and kill people. And I'm pretty damn sure I saw one scoping out the subway the other day, and it totally freaked me out because there was something just not right about an extremely nervous (and I mean EXTREMELY nervous) middle-eastern looking guy with a fresh buzz cut dressed in brand new Abercrombie with the collar up and tracing words on the subway wall with his subway pass, wearing a nondescript black backpack that doesn't at all go with the rest of his 'new' look. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean I'm wrong (or right for that matter). There have been terrorist attempts at all recent Olympic games, what makes you think China is immune?
