U.S. senator Sam Brownback has charged China with installing Internet-spying equipment in all major hotel chains serving the Beijing Olympics, the Guardian reported on Tuesday. The conservative Republican cited hotel documents he received, stating that all guests at hotels where Olympic visitors are staying "will be subjected to invasive intelligence-gathering by the Chinese Public Security Bureau." Brownback refused to reveal the names of hotels, but handed out English-language translations of two separate documents he said were received by hotels, outlining the Chinese government's instructions on how to use the Internet spying software. According to AFP, one of the documents stated:
It is required that your company install and run the Security Management System for Internet Access from Public Places in addition to provide network interfaces consistent with the industrial technical standards on public security. Refusing the installment or stopping operation of the system after installment will be subject to punishment.Brownback, who ran an unsuccessful campaign for U.S. president this year, said he was first notified months ago by human rights advocates of Beijing's plan to monitor Internet activity, but adds that since then, hotels have come forward with detailed information on the monitoring systems. The U.S. State Department issued a warning in March that Americans traveling to Beijing for the Games would have their Internet activity monitored, but China responded that security arrangements were in accordance with international standards. Brownback called on China to revoke the order, calling the Chinese government "the greatest enabler of human rights abuses around the world."

This week in Shanghaiist

they have been doing it for years, whats new
The dumbest McCain was anyway chosen, no matter how smartie Brownback want to show, even by bashing China, and with a new trick.
Here is the older ones in one sigle month:
China spy girl steal British officials’ Black Berry
China arms found in Sudan
China gene doping of athlets
Over 1 million Beijingers forced eviction for Birdnest construction.
China ban Africans’ entry to bars in Beijing
China flight of luxury goods over Australia to Zimbabwe
China built villa for Mugabe
China drilling oil off Mexico bay
China copied US congressmen’s harddisks
You guys have any real creative new stuff?
why don't they just make it easier on everyone and shut the damn thing off for the month? at least that way no one has to pretend any more, in any regard. oh yeah, then we couldn't read Shanghaiist any more... what I live for... crisp, pithy, always insightful writing... never mind!
it's been a pretty busy month for Chinese covert ops, hey Eastman? good on em... keeps the rest of the world on their toes. sort of. not really.
"keeps the rest of the world on their toes. sort of. not really "
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
hey WESTman, you forgot the conspiracy of how the Chinese Governmnet are "NOT" paying off the earthquake families with hush money in case they tell Western journalists or SHOCK HORROR try to sue the government
I suddenly realized China of Internet spying was accused by U.S. senator, UUUUU SSSSS senatooor!
voted in by great Americaaaans who voted in the great Bushiiiiiit the waterboaaarrrding! So I think China really should take it seriously. Lol!
Slow down there Eastman! You can say what you want about the senator, but don't EVER accuse us of ELECTING Bush. At least not the first time. Second time... well... accidents do happen, even in the greatest nation in the world, nay, galaxy, nay, universe.
What you fail to understand good man is that it's not like the US and the rest of the world don't do these things. They do, regularly, all the time, and much worse. They just don't get caught all the time. Oh, wait, yes they do. Never mind. It's just so easy to bug you, so why not? (yawn)
Cry me a river. What country doesn't spy on other countries? Was Brownback born yesterday? What a douche bag.
Using the Olympics as a way to trawl for any and all forms of information from visitors is pretty low, though.
