Video: Shanghai on a budget - Xiaolongbao and Pigeon attacks

If living like a rock star in Shanghai has forced you to relive your college ramen days, this series is for you. ChinaOnTV shares with us a pilot from "50 Kuai Shanghai" where the host, Emily, explores familiar neighborhoods and shows us how to eat and play for less than 50RMB a day (about $7). This three part episode was filmed around People's Square.

After becoming a certified pastry chef in Chicago, Emily arrived in Shanghai and put in her time at House of Flour. When she isn't out in search of cheap, delicious food, she can usually be found rocking out at a local punk show, or running her own cupcake and pastry catering service for events like Punks for Monks and Roots & Shoots.

Emily goes behind the scenes to learn how to make xiaolongbao at one of our favorites, Jia jia tang bao.

In part two Emily walks it off around and under People's Square, where she introduces us to bubble tea, an impromptu photo sticker shoot, and pigeons. Lots of pigeons.

Family-style cooking at a restaurant with no name, but a helpful boss who knows exactly what a hungry foreigner wants to eat, regardless of Chinese skills or lack thereof.
