Superstitious numerologists draw connection between China's medal count and the Sichuan earthquake
The Chinese internets are abuzz with the idea that China's final medal count of 51 golds, 22 silvers and 28 bronzes coincides with the date and time of May's devastating Sichuan earthquake — 5.12, 2:28pm.
We must admit we ourselves were kind of freaked out by the connection when we first heard this. Were the heavens trying to tell us something?
Alas, if only it were really true. China won 21 silvers at last count, not 22 — and with the closing ceremony now behind us, there is no more chance for China to win that missing silver to make this supernatural conspiracy come true.
Still that hasn't stopped the rumour from spreading like wildfire. But fear not, as inhouse censors with the key Chinese portals are now deleting the superstitious posts as soon as they appear, as this comparison of the same search term on Baidu shows.
