Welcome to the newest episode of Chinese Soundbites, a podcast series brought to you by ChinesePod and Shanghaiist. Every week we'll be bringing you topics and words pulled straight from the headlines, in Mandarin Chinese.
This week Jenny and Amber jump into a topic that's on (almost) everyone's lips -- the US presidential election. If you're in China this Fall (and especially if you're an American), you'll need to be able to answer the inevitable question of who holds the keys to your hanging chad.
Vocabulary:
- 总统 [zǒngtǒng] president (of a country)
- 大选 [dàxuǎn] general election
- 麦凯恩 [màikǎiēn] John McCain
- 奥巴马 [àobāmǎ] Barack Obama

This week in Shanghaiist

How do you say "gimmicky unqualified Vice Presidential disaster pick" in Chinese?
She does have a cute "Elaine Benes" look to her though.
I offer a suggestion: Perhaps the content could use more vocabulary, and less banter about which candidate is "cuter", or less shamless plugs for ChinesePod about how McCain's name sounds similar "the founder of ChinesePod, Ken".
For those of you who think I'm kidding.... listen to it and waste the time for yourself. Or save yourself that and just get all important content from the text above without clicking play.
ChinesePod Ken's political views sway to the right. He's a Bush loving, liberal hating Irishman. Go figure!
