China-bashing in Israeli media

Keren NoybahTaiwan-based Israeli blogger Filination records several instances of China-bashing by Israeli TV personalities which he says are signs of a widespread Sinophobia that is "now all over Israeli media". The first instance is a long anti-China tirade by Keren Noybah of Channel 1’s News Today in which she describes the Chinese government as a "dictatorship in the worst possible form" and accuses all who watch the Olympic opening ceremony of "participating in an act of deception". The second instance is a dialogue that involves Avri Gilad (from the same morning show) who had this to say before the Olympics opened:"I wish they would cancel it. I wish no country would participate. It’s outragous for anybody to go to China. It’s the worst scandal possible." The last instance involves TV commentator Oren Nehari who during Channel 1's live telecast of the Olympic opening ceremony noted how the movements of the thousands of performers in the taichi segment of the show reminded him of the Nazis. His comment provoked a stinging rebuke from Professor Wang Yu (王宇), lecturer of Israeli history and culture at the Peking University. While she was right that Oren Nehari made a remark that was uncalled for, we found all her reason lost in the emotionally-charged email and her threats to blow up the matter in the Chinese media if the broadcaster did not make an apology soon.

OK.

Calling Chinese government dictatorship, ok their opinion, no problem to me, calling for a cancel of the olympics, ok their opinion, no problem to me. people think differently and i respect that and plus the olympic is already over and was hailed a success.

BUT...

Calling Taichi Nazi, well then guess what FUCK THEM.

These fucking jews, I already have enough of them, that stupid fucking athlete insulted China/Chinese people, i did not have any problem because I thought he was just an odd one, he's an athlete not an intellectual, forgive him.

But these fuckers now calling Taichi Nazi oh well guess what fucking bitches....Taichi is not only practiced by Chinese people, it is practiced all over the world by foreigners

What are these fucking Israeli good at anyway from day 1 of their country, they have been living off the States, stirring up troubles in the Middle East, all they do in their country is manufacturing weapons and weapons, provoke Iran and put everyone in trouble, fucking illegal state. Taichi is part of Chinese tradition and at least it is practiced by other foreigners as well, at least China has traditions, what traditions exactly do those jews have ? Star of David ? Candle, synagogue ? or the belief that Jews are Chosen people ? Chosen people to be slaves of the Egyptians ? Chosen people to be marginalized by the Romans ? Chosen people to be gypsies across Europe in the early 20th century ? Chosen people to be decimated by the Nazis ? Did the Nazi fucking use Taichi to throw their people in the ovens or the gas chambers ?

Sometimes I cannot help to think if China did make a profound mistake by housing those jews in WW2.

They are just basically showing absolutely no gratitude.

oh Btw

Did you know that anti semitism is rising very fast , not only in the Middle East but also in some part of Germany, Russia and definitely in Great Britain, the BBC channel reported many case of anti semitism and destroying synagogues 2 months ago.

user-pic

this is so low of them it's unbelievable

user-pic

it's amazing the buddhist symbol hasn't reminded them of nazi yet

@snowisread

anti-semitism or any form of racism is reserved for the lowest of the intellectual bottom-feeders in any society. lets not get into that.

the comments out of the context here suggest they are political in nature, which is ok because, different from china, in modern societies every citizen is entitled to a political opinion which he/she can issue without getting 'silenced' or locked away.

I understand freedom of speech but not to the fucking level of calling other people tradition Nazi, did Taichi fucking kill 6 millions Jews ? Did Taichi fucking kill 50 millions people in WW2. Was Taichi responsible for Auchzwit. Did Taichi fucking start off WW2 ?

Taichi is a form of exercise, for meditation. Sometimes I really wonder, do the Jews actually think before they speak.

FLG meditation is also a form of exercise, the CCPee should remember that.

@ nanheyangrouchuan,
FLG is a commencial sect newly invented by an ex-armed-police trumpeter with his aim to swindle money, while Taiji is a kind of real meditation practice with thousands years history. Only the ignorant peasants in China and faked liberal idiots in U-Suck-Azz believe it loyally.

@ snowisread,
most of my Chinese friends dont give a damn what west media small men say about China now, after 6 months training not to be provoked and enraged. A new power should look like one. Anyway, all those hostile provacations in any froms are mostly and obviously out of jealousy and fear of China.

I find it odd that some of the people here feel that somehow no rational person could dislike China. In my view, China has no scarcity of things to dislike, although on the whole, I do like the people.

As for the Olympic ceremony it was highly political and showed a great deal of cultural arrogance Also, aesthetically it had some elements of the kind of pomp, pageantry and ceremony tainted with elements of cultural chauvinism that could conceivably evoke associations with fascist regimes of the past.

Would I call it Nazi? No, but nor would I blame anyone who found it objectionable, so exclusive and hubristic it was. It was essentially a ceremony partially based in reality, partially in mythology and exclusively dedicated to ancestor worship.

It's about time the world voice what they really feel about Israel..

@ snowisred - I really think you're missing part of the context of the criticism towards the opening ceremony. No one is attacking TaiChi. They're concerned about the aesthetics and the motives of the opening ceremony. Sure it was a fine spectacle, and showcased the glory of Chinese culture in a creative way --- but it was arrogant and elitist, a show of power and too much pride.

The Olympics are supposed to be a celebration of all countries, the diversity of the world, etc., not just one nation.

Instead of "One World, One Dream" it was more like China saying: "Our World, Our Dream".

Sooner or later there will be a war between China and the west. I can't wait for that day to come. Let's kill each other.

@ Dreamtheatre

Your name suits you.

"The Olympics are supposed to be a celebration of all countries, the diversity of the world, etc., not just one nation."

Yes, the Olympic GAMES reflect the cooperation and participation of all countries, but the Opening and Closing ceremonies are typically about one country: the host country (with the upcoming host also represented at the closing). China put on a great spectacle and should be proud of their accomplishment. The only display of arrogance and elitism I see is coming from the detractors.

I am very suspicious of the Israeli media's and blogger's motives here. This is from out of left-field and smacks of an alterior agenda, perhaps a deflection of attention from something else that could be embarrassing to the Israelis, and China is a convenient scapegoat these days.

For a people that oppresses the Palestinians like Nazis. Enuff said!

Newsflash! A few random talking heads in a second-rate nation who have long ago exhausted the world's patience and attention span moan about a country on the other side of the world. Film at eleven.

Tell me again why this is relevant news?

money-driven Jews' words? what a joke! ...
oh. maybe holocaust did not happen. Maybe it is a lie fabricated by those greedy Jewish. I am starting to believe what the Iranian president said... Do i have freedom of speech by saying this?

As i said long before, Beijing Plympics have been already over and very sucessful. now what you losers feel? cultural arrogance? cultural chauvinism ? blah, blah.... face it! these are all LOSERs' feeling. Stop whining here! get over yourself! find something meaningful to do

i don’t think Wangyu’s remarks of going public is a threatening. If you think your words are right, what are you afraid of? You would not take it as a threatening.

The replies to this post continuously frustrate me- it is upsetting that the people that repeatedly post here do not see the difference between remarks made by individuals and sentiments of a nation.

One of the biggest issues I have is the confusion of the usage of Jew- Judaism and Israel, are, of course, in explicably linked. However, bashing "jews" as an entire people, remarking that China shouldn't have saved some in World War II, and calling out generally violent and racist things is completely uncalled for. I don't agree with most Israeli actions, but to suggest that all Jews are in agreement with Israeli media is extremely erroneous. Do you agree and stand by everything that the Chinese media says? Do I stand by and agree with everything the US media says? No.

So, some people in the Israeli media are Sinophobic- so what? Far more people in China hate the west (Dreamtheater) and are bigoted, biased, and racist toward people not of their own kind. Countries all over the world have this. I don't hate the US media even though it continuously badmouths MY ancestral people (Arabs).

Grow a thick skin- and whoever is blogging about this topic...I'm not going to say censor yourself, but I would suggest not provoking people who are looking for any excuse to be insulted.

And here's another thought- how about saving some of that outrage towards the people that harmed your fellow countrymen- for example, the men who put poison into baby formula? Government corruption? Shoddy goods?

I don't think it's a big deal. People generally talk a lot of crap and the media is good at getting people excited about it...

If something is untrue but you get really upset about it, it may appear to have touched a nerve, and so in turn what was said may "appear" have some truth behind it.

So don't get upset. Take it on the chin. Chi Ku...

First and foremost I would like to apologise to those who are offended by what I said, I sincerely apologize. I would like to ask if any moderators here can delete my previous comment, I actually read it all over again and I even feel disgusted at myself, I don't even understand why I could write such disgusting remarks about other people. I am sorry again, please help me delete that comment.

Thank you very much.

Count me among the disgusted as well.

Think before you speak.

Okay okay, please delete my previous comment as well. I love west and I love Jews.

Dreamtheatre:
You are so funny! hahaha....
I guess you are very young, too young to stick to your stance.(no offence) You will find in your life that you can not let everyone satisfied. and you have right to be angry. don't buy those bullshits which try to convince you that if a guy hits your right face, you should prepare your left face to be hit. Just because somebody said your words were not appropriate doesn't mean your words are not right.
For Jew, well. You will see it by yourself. I know some jews. I have to say sometimes stereotype reveals something.
How about the West? well. there are also people. they also have shortcomings of human kind. For some Westeners, this minute they are trying to convince you that you should not be angry when other people say something bad about your country. Next minute, when you point out their country also has a bad record in a certain area of human rights, they become furious

With Israeli propaganda ... err media making these racist comments towards China, comments from Shahar Zubari is not surprising and probably represents a majority of Israeli's opinion.

Really Richardlee? We become furious? Because we Evil Westerners all have the same reactions, do we?

To not be able to accept criticism of one's own country/culture is of the utmost ignorance. Similarly, to think that everyone in the West/East feel the same way about something- equally erroneous.

Clearly, if you know some jews, you know their whole culture, right? Like, I know some Chinese people that are bad....so that means all Chinese people are bad, right?

The Isreali occupation and ghetto-lizaton of Palestine is a crime of humanity. While I have deep sympathies for victims of the atrocities during WW2, modern day Jews and Isreali’s are not those people. They instead are now the oppressors and aggressors. They kill palestinians without rebuke. The world doesn’t care. They perform paranoid first strikes against neighbors. And whenever they are criticized, they cry that tired motto “hey, we;re jews, the victims of hitler” and compare anyone they don’t like to hitler. Give a break. I have no sumpathies whatsover for modern day jews and isrealis. I see them as hypocrits.

fuck nationalism and fuck sports. therefore, fuck the olympics.

and btw the israel lobby is real.

I've been lucky enough to live and work both in Israel and China (I'm from Africa)...and I'll tell you that the Israelis and the Chinese are are over the top nationalistic - this is not a good quality as it breeds subjectiveness and stubbornness.

I agree with hubcap on the nationalism sentiment, but sports are good, esp. if you're a good sport, which clearly that Israeli windsurfer isn't.

Israelis have some sort of beef with china? Are you kidding me? Oh, I know: China buys oil from Iran. Big deal. China needs oil, Iran has oil. Anything else?

Also, why does this even matter- do you know the population of Israel as compared to China? (I'll give you a hint, China is many, many, many, many times the population.)

"Israelis have some sort of beef with china? Are you kidding me? Oh, I know: China buys oil from Iran. Big deal. China needs oil, Iran has oil. Anything else?"

China also sells Iran many of its new weapons systems and has been helping Iran with its, er, civilian nuclear program.

Alright, this is getting annoying. Regardless of what some random Israeli said about China or the Chinese government, its no excuse to go on an anti-semitic tirade against all Jews everywhere. Israel is a state that, regardless of their politics, is made up of Jews, Muslims and Christians among other belief sets. It is a government composed of individuals that all, believe it or not, have their own beliefs. Also, not all Jews are Israeli and not all Jews support Israeli actions in all circumstances. To confuse the two is every bit as ignorant as holding an American of Chinese descent responsible for everything that you don't like about the Chinese government. Judging any group of people as a group and not a collection of individuals is similarly stupid, be they Chinese, Westerners, Israelis, Jews, etc. The fact that almost no one posting here seems to get that is incredibly disheartening.

derek: I think of jews when I think of israel.. I'm sure that is by design.

like wise, there are muslims in china, but what do you visualize when you think China?

Ugh, this thread is hurting my brain.

I am an Isreali/Jew and I LOVE CHINA.
WOOOAH,.
That must be really confusing to some of the Chinese people on here.
Yes, we don't have some part of our cerebellum physically attached to our state/govt.

just the concept of bashing a country is kinda crazy. what about bashing a mountain range or a lake? fuck the urals and fuck lake michigan! haha. that raises the question of what a country is. seems to be that the agree usage points to a country being everything that is contained with in the boarders set up by the governing state and agreed to by the united nations. so people, let's get specific about what we are bashing here. state bashing is one of my favorite pastimes along with pig bashing, although neither present much of a challenge.

not sure if 艾未未's comments on the opening ceremony have been linked to or reported on shanghaiist but they are pretty on point i would say. and coming from the dude who designed the bird's nest they carry at least a little wait. so i will cut and paste.

"Can you have the self-confidence to clearly examine yourself, rather than to give this kind of pretend smile on your face... It's this kind of fake smile which is disgusting ... So I hate this."

When asked about what China was trying to hide, Ai said: "There are too many things. The whole political structure, the condition of civil rights ... corruption, pollution, education, you name it."

"Then just say 'let's forget about all this,' let's just light some big fireworks, let's have those stupid directors, those people are such opportunists and they just become part of the powerful manipulators because they have no self-consciousness and have such bad taste."

Ai said the 91,000-seat "Bird's Nest" remained a beautiful, if regretful, commission.

"I did it because I love design and the idea of how it would be looked at by others," he said. "I can also do self-criticism."

he wrote in the guardian:

The 2008 Olympics has created an illusion of China to the public and to the outside world. It is so fantastic, so unreal, that the entire meaning of the games is being distorted. At the opening ceremony we saw this global festival manipulated for the sake of narrow nationalism.

The propaganda system of the Chinese government went into overdrive, public money was spent like water and ranks of mediocre performers were employed to create an alternative, distorted reality. It received fake applause from the country's media and public. Officials from the International Olympic Committee and United Nations also collaborated in the deception with their comments on the success of the games and the improvement of the environment.

Whatever happened to the non-politicised festival of sport that we were promised? Anyone who cares about truth should avoid not politics, but Olympic lies. Beijing wants to show off how progressive and harmonious the city has become, so it has expelled migrant workers because they are poor, underpaid and seen as a potential source of insecurity.

Yet it was these workers – these slaves with socialist characteristics – who laid every brick and tile of the modern urban landscape. For the sake
of appearances, even the small shops they frequented have been shut down, along with many street markets, video outlets and clubs. So much for the slogans on the bridges and billboards that read "Beijing welcomes you" and "People's Olympics".
--

it's really not that much of a stretch to go from the opening ceremony to the nazis. a massive show put on by an authoritarian government. it straight up looked fascist. nice turn of phrase: "slaves with socialist characteristics."

my passport is blue. when i was in the united snakes i spent lots of time criticizing the government. now i'm here and the criticism will continue. george bush, 胡锦涛 hu jintao, george washington, 毛泽东 mao zedong, power hungry killers of people, fuck em all.

China bashing happens everywhere in western media. Why? Jewish own more than 70% of world media coverage. Why China? Chinese people don't want to be slaves of western media, by the guise of the name of 'democracy'. American, Canadian, Britain, Australian and French.. are slaves.
