The party photos are so predictable and stupid with boys and girls looking aroused with puckered lips and bleary eyes. Everyone can look smart and everyone can have a tipple because everyone bats outside of their income bracket in China. And if you can't, well, there's always room for hangers-on, if you're cute enough. I remember some time ago, someone described the Shanghai as being a "dirty shrimp cooler full of pretentiousness and STDs," which I think is still apt. It's a temporary desert oasis that will last until your liver gives-out or Shanghai gets to expensive, whichever comes first.</p>
