UP TO five per cent of infants in Shanghai could have kidney stones after drinking tainted milk formula, media reported on Friday, as publicity surrounding the scandal was muted by China's manned space launch.Hans Troedsson, China representative of the World Health Organisation says he expects more babies to die, but a large increase in the toll is not expected.Beijing is battling public alarm and international dismay after thousands of Chinese children were hospitalised, sick from infant milk formula tainted with melamine, a cheap industrial chemical that can be used to cheat quality checks.
'A recent city-wide health check of children under three years old showed about five per cent were diagnosed with symptoms of possible kidney stones after being fed contaminated powdered milk,' the China Daily reported.
The paper did not give an estimate of the number of children who might be affected.

- Taiwan's Pizza Hut has pulled grated cheese from all outlets as they were found to have unacceptably high levels of melamine.
- Xinhua reports that the production of White Rabbit candies have been halted for close to a week. Following Singapore's findings of melamine in the candy, Australia, New Zealand and the United States have pulled it off the shelves — and now, even stores in China are following suit. Bad times for the Shanghai company!

Our son is one of the American children who is also a casualty of the poison milk in China.
At the same time we are frantic to learn our son's needs and treatments there is little on the news here in China regarding the melamine milk except, "all is good and life is returning to normal".
To those of us living and working in China we were not surprised to see the "warning" released immediately after the standard and para Beijing Olympics were finished. Then taking a far back seat again when their Space shuttle was launched.
Our son's health would not have worsened if the government had released the truth when they learned about the contaminated mild just before the Olympics started.
The world has reason to be very concerned about the ethics of the Chinese business culture and of the Chinese government. If you lived here you would understand why it will never change.
Our son is not the first, and will not be the last....
Tell them yellowmen you are American and your son will get elite treatment, a treatment no Chinese peasants' children could get though they were the very group the cheap Sanlu milk targeted.
Then throw away hard-got visa and, for sake of your son, leave "commie demon toxid faked ugly" China for, if you still prefer not to live in free world, Iraq where your son would probably have no chance to get poisoned since he could well be among 600,000 under-5 year old infant death after 2003. Let's thank Bush together who has reduced the number so low that China will feel ashamed. Most heavenly thing is, if your son were in dealy tragedy, no western media would disturb him, since they are only busy with the dead badies poisoned personally by Hu jintao, another Sadam they are eager to help Bush overthrow.
