Elton John's Aida kicks off 11 city China tour in Shanghai

Elton John and Tim Rice's stylistically eclectic rock musical AIDA opened in Shanghai to a full house at the Majestic Theater last Saturday, starring Marja Harmon as Aida, Casey Elliott as Radames, and Leah Allers as Amneris — all three of whom were part of the North American tour of the show in 2006 and 2007. The show runs till Oct 12 in Shanghai, after which it moves on to Suzhou, Nanjing, Changsha, Wuhan, Ningbo, Hangzhou, Xi'an, Beijing, Chengdu and Tianjin.

Unfortunately, a very underwhelming production, what I take from this show is A) Don't let Elton John near a musical, it ends up turning out like a pithy Disney piece B) Don't let Chinese people into the theater, their comportment is terrible, constant chattering, people leaning up and out of their seats and taking constant pictures, makes the show impossible to view! Best part of the show is the talented vocalists, amazing control and clarity, really great. The production as a whole... must barely mediocre, can't say its worth the 800 Yuan...
