Chinese Soundbites Podcast: Hairy Crabs

2471087_243451.jpgWelcome to the inaugural episode of Chinese Soundbites, a podcast series brought to you by ChinesePod and Shanghaiist. Every week we'll be bringing you topics and words pulled straight from the headlines, in Mandarin Chinese.

This week we're taking a look at Shanghai's favorite son -- no, not Liu Xiang -- the humble hairy crab. If you're wondering why people would put in so much effort into eating an animal with such little meat, you'll find the answer here. It makes me wonder whether or not Shanghainese parents' version of the "birds and bees" story involves hairy crabs...

  • 大闸蟹 [dàzháxiè] hairy crab
  • 公的 [gōng de] male (of animals)
  • 母的 [mǔ de] female (of animals)

Love these soundbites. really helps get MODERN CHinese into us. Thanks Shanghaiist...
My mother and father in law love these things. Hairy Crabs. They always ask me if we have them in America... I just say that we have ocean crabs but not freshwater crabs... and definitley not hairy ones. Ha ha ha.

Speaking of Hairy crabs....this is a funny cartoon about them.

check it out!?!

and you are right... eating hairy crabs is time consuming and a big hassle... but the Shanghainese love them!

Like Magnus, I love the Soundbites series. I just wonder if there's any chance you'll upload them to iTunes so I can subscribe to it?

As for the 大闸蟹, I'll try anything once, even the sperm of a hairy crab.
