@andylee twitters: “crazy, 10am this morn, 2 window wipers on gondala fell to death. police cordoned off huamao bldg 3. blood & wreckage still visible”
Huamao Building is located on Pudong Nan Lu. No news yet from our regular news sources (let us know if you find any), but our only surprise is that accidents like this don’t happen more frequently. (Or maybe they do — there just aren’t any Twitterers around.)
CORRECTION: We just realised @andylee was referring to the Huamao Building in Beijing, not the one in Shanghai. Whether it was Shanghai or Beijing, our thoughts are with the deceased and their families.
UPDATE: In the only report we’ve been able to find on the above accident so far, Beijing Evening News 《北京晚报》reports that three window cleaners are confirmed dead at press time, but the final death toll might be higher than that. The journalist arrived at the scene one hour after the accident to find one man still hanging in the air from his safety harness, motionless. The gondola hit the mall below with such a huge impact that the top of it was damaged, a loud thud could be heard from far away, and blood was splattered everywhere.
