the regulator: i guess you are being sarcastic??? And i just think you suck, you must have soooo many prejudices that it stops you from developing . I know there are many Chinese who lack morality just as many in other countries, even western countries, So I'm VERY VERY SURPRISED OF this incident, that the people around just laughed at the situation, VERY SURPRISED.

@Rebekah Pothaar Yeah, I'm sure they'd all rush to help if it wasn't for the fact they might wrongly be accused! Everyone, clearly, abides by the Chinese rule that as long as you are standing further than 2 metres away, gawping, cigarette hanging from lips and chuckling vacantly you definitely won't get blamed.

This is a terrible story, but like everyone else, I am unsurprised. Generally, I've found that if Chinese don't know you, they won't do anything to help you, regardless of how dire the circumstances. "It's not my issue," they always say.

Step 1: take pulse -> a) dead? call police b) alive? apply pressure to any bleeding wounds, call ambulance Step 2: give CPR as needed until help arrives, ignore useless locals who may gather to watch From the report it does sound as if the man was dead already. These two people already went way above and beyond what is typical in this country and should be commended for their efforts. Even worse then the utter lack of concern by the group of taxi drivers is the fact the person responsible will probably never be caught.

Hi, that is a schocking, very sad story and I think that is not normal in China. I never saw people so rude. Next time most important: first remember the number of the bad car who killed the man. Then call the emergency and police.

@rebekah pothaar so i heard, after the fact. i talked to some chinese friends about it the next day and they looked at me like i was insane for helping. i guess a couple months before someone got a pretty harsh punishment for hit-and-run when they were just the first to respond on the scene and not at all responsible. it's hard to imagine though what with a whole flock of cabbies that no one would help based on communal vouching. so much for a good samaritan act in china.

@xiaoerjing I think a lot of the time when things like this happen, people are worried to help because they know there is a possibility (especially in the absence of reliable witnesses) that they will get blamed for the crime. It's a scary situation to be in. Our friend was deeply upset by what happened.

this same type of thing happened to me in nanjing last fall. a drunk driver hit a woman on a scooter right in front of my taxi. i ran out to help her and make sure she was ok while trying to triage a bit. tv crews showed up to film the foreigner helping the bleeding woman and only much later was an ambulance called. turns out the large crowd that gathered all thought i was responsible despite the angry man reeking of baijiu that was yelling at me to mind my own while trying to push his car out of the median. totally shocked when it happened. reading this only enrages me further.

Chinese displaying lack of morality. What a shocker. Is anyone really surprised by the Chinese antics? After all it wasn't them (or one of their kids I.E. their pension fund) who suffered, so why would they give a flying fuck?
