Reuters informs us:
CHINESE researchers who spent 3,000 hours observing the public in Beijing say their behaviour shot to a new high of 82.68 on the 'civilization index' this year following a campaign to improve habits for the Olympics, the Beijing Morning Post reported on Tuesday.Dang. No word there on how Shanghai performed. The score is up from a middling 65.21 in 2005, according to the study conducted by the Humanistic Olympics Studies Centre at People's University in Beijing.
Researchers found 97 per cent of residents willing to give directions to strangers this year, up 26 per cent from 2005, and said rates of spitting and cursing in public fell to less than 1 per cent during the Games.
Banners and notices hung throughout Beijing ahead of the Olympics encouraged habits like waiting in line for buses and assisting visitors to the city.

Yeah, do i have to say the question is, will it STAY there and even, dare i ask, keep improving ?
But like every "campaign" in China, things will go back to normal eventually...
No bias there, party "researchers" watching their own to see if there is improved behavior in China's capital. Of course, all of the migrants, minorities and others were all shipped out of town, put under house arrest or under threat of retaliation.
what a load of fukin bull.
Sorry, what? Where does that article mention the researchers are CCP? The university's official site touts social sciences as one of its outstandings branches of academia so they're likely to take an interest in findings, positive or not.
You are right daying, anything put out by Beijing is quite a load of fucking bull.
Shekky, do you really think that any publicized social analysis of the behaviors of locals would be anything but complimentary?
That's not what I asked in my post. Where in that article does it say they are party researchers?
I also happen to believe if any Western institution did the same study, the results wouldn't be far off since the Beijing populace was drilled to make the Games inviting and hospitable.
But people in western cities don't need to be told not to queue jump, urinate in broad daylight or vomit on the subway whenever they feel like it.
^They do in New York!
(not that being told would change anyone's behavior)
