File this under "Only in China". This report by Melissa Chan of Al-Jazeera has intrigued us with how Chinese buyers are now banding together to shop for apartments so as to bargain for better prices with developers. The practise, known as tuan gou (团购) or 'group purchases', has long been used to buy anything from apparel to household items, but this really is the first time we've heard of apartment buyers using the same tactic. And apparently, the practise is growing.

I thought the Wenzhounese have been doing this for ages??
If you buy in China, you still do not own it. Its a lease, at the mercy of ever changing policies and mood-swings.
If you have money and you want to buy real estate, buy somewhere in the world where you can legally OWN the land and where enforceable law protects your property.
Just forget about the rest.
If the only reason one is buying is to invest, the Pirx is correct, but if it for reasons such as actually wanting to live in it? or just to own it as the case may be for some locals and others that see it as a dream or requirement, then so be it, just choose wisely. But no it is not always a bad idea to buy...even here despite the issues.
