Problem is Chinese universities are pretty terrible and instruments of state mind-control, which is fairly synonymous with education in much of Asia. Still, this is a very sad story and her parents must be devastated.

I would think most kids sent to study abroad are somewhat sheltered just because many of them come from families who are somewhat well off and have had the means to keep them sheltered. It's just hard to believe that the chances of this happening would be less likely to happen to a 18 year old girl from the U.K. or U.S. This guy was out for blood and he found it.

Well, tradition aside, I don't see the fault in sending your 18 year old daughter or 19 year old son to study abroad. Parental supervision or not, no ones prepared to encounter an attack like this. Let's just hope this sicko is caught.

It hurts the feelings of the Chinese people that so many "successful parents", with utter disregard to Chinese tradition, casually toss their kids off to foreign countries to "study" without adult supervision and constant parental attention.
