The reggae-loving Rastafarians of Jamaica be lookin at all this world financial crisis and thinkin "Babylon be fallin' down". Shanghai may have avoided the worst of the world's money problems… but it can't escape the Reggae sound as the city's Uprooted Sunshine Sound System celebrate its third birthday at The Shelter tonight.
The diverse crew welcome special guests, the Jungle Ambassadors - DJ Terry T and MC Tenor Fly (pictured, Knowledge and Wisdom, Congo Natty), plus Blooddunza from Heavy, Hong Kong, along side drummers Zenmala Jalama and the full Uprooed Sunshine Sound System. That means Gaz "Drunk Monk" Williams, the elusive dji, Switzerland's finest Deville, crew stalwarts Yas, and Boombadil, Tahitian sender of much love MC Didje and the Manchurian MC ChaCha.
Drunk Monk said he could barely contain both his excitement at tonight's event and his pride at the crew's third birthday. He said, "This last year has flown by. Alot of things have changed for us since our second birthday. Yas has had a baby, I opened The Shelter with Gary (AKA the lab crew's DJ V-Nutz), Logo Bar had its make over... Its been an eventful year."
He added, "Our crew is ever evolving. Yu-Fah returned to Japan early this year and Boombadil has joined us. We still hang out alot but we are all really busy with other responsibilties now aswell. I have the Shelter, Boombadil has his ice cream business, Yas has his son, Israel is always a busy man. But we have big plans for the next year, we are going to work more closely from now on."
Drunk Monk revealed his crew was involved in various individual production projects, "Didje has his album coming up and we will host the release party early next year, ChaCha is working on her EP aswell which is coming on really nicely and me and Blaise will be putting together some mix cd's shortly."
Gaz describes the Uprooted's sound as "all syles of Jamaican music and music which have been influenced by Jamaican music. Yas and Boombadil are big into roots, Blaise is into roots, dancehall and dubstep, these days i mainly play dub and dubstep, didje is all about dub and reggae and israel is a deep dub guy."
