Authors say they doubt environmental causes. Hello, sirs; even heard of FAS? Not that that is strictly the cause of this, but its a commonly used solvent imbibed for social situations. And the reality is that the woman only needs 2 drinks one time during the pregnancy, and if she doesn't drink, the father does have to be a serious drinker to damage his DNA to pass it on. For a mother, the timing of her binge will affect the area of damage depending on what parts are developing at that time. The brain is affected throughout and after birth to three years because the brain grows through all those periods. So no matter what the physical anomalies are (they may be very subtle, like length of toes or simply narrow face)the brain can be affected in various ways.
And if alcohol is capapble of so much, yes, what about melamine? We know very little about it. We know the toys we got from China had lead paint. What about that? How many other toxins do we not know about? We worry they are targeting us...until we found out about the melamine they were feeding their own. What other things are they doing to themselves?
Then there is the other not so remote possibility....malnutrition. One vitamin deficiency can cause any number of symptoms, B vitamin deficiencies tend to cause nerve related stuff, A deficiency tends to cause eye related things, for example. Mineral deficiencies will cause extra limbs and double faced calves.

If it weren't for the fact that the anomaly appears only on the hands and feet, it would almost look like a case of a twin that was mostly absorbed by the surviving fetus.

I think it's disgusting that people will use their children's birth defects and deformities to make money. Especially in a child this young, there is the lack of ability to decide for themselves if they want to be in the public eye, and in older children, there is often a deep desire to please their parents.

Put a jersey on the kid and sign him up for piano lessons!

It'll be another 10 years or so before I read in the Shanghai Daily how the poor parents capitalized on this.

Another Chine$e M$ney Maker!
