Just Amazing: China images from the LIFE photo archive hosted by Google

Via Andrew Sullivan we learn of this extraordinary project:

Search millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today. Most were never published and are now available for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google.

Here is a basic search for Shanghai. And for China. And, while we're at it, Beijing and Peking. You can get a lot more specific than that, too. For example this search will show you guys playing football on People's Square.

The photos are all in fairly large formats, too (with a watermark in the corner). Perfect for computer desktops.

A word of warning: If you were planning on getting some real work done today, do not click on any of the links above. The collection is fascinating, and sucks you in.
