End of 40 year long territorial dispute between Russia and China brings trade benefits

Russia Today reports that the end of a 40 year old border dispute that's seen 340 square kilometres, or half of an island called Bolshoi Ussuriyasky (or Heixiazi island in Chinese) being officially ceded to China has warmed up bilateral ties and boosted trade. BBC cites unnamed Chinese reports that say Russia will also return all of Yinlong island (or Tarabarov in Russian) — a detail which was not mentioned in this report. In the first five months of this year, Sino-Russia bilateral trade rocketed ahead by 60%.

Imports of raw materials from Russia went through the roof in the first half 2008, not because of love and affection, but because of availability and somewhat lower prices as well as a 50% import duty advantage for goods imported by rail from Russia to China.

The duty advantage for Russian goods imported by rail has been canceled by China this autumn, after Russia banned timber exports to China.

The price development of crude oil (more than doubling) is part of these success-statistics.

If you torture data long enough, they will confess to anything.
