What Chinese civil servants do when no one's watching

Some reporter from Henan TV Station went into the public service hall of Neihuang Country (内黄县) and captured these images of civil servants playing online poker, knitting and even sleeping soundly in their armchairs when they should be working. That service standards in government bodies remain poor is to be expected, all the more when you're talking about a small and relatively poor county of just 700,000 in inland China. What took us more by surprise was the tone that this journalist used to shame and put down the already-embarrassed civil servants in front of the camera. In comments by Youku users translated by Youku Buzz:

  • “Why did the journalist talk like a policeman?”
  • “How can the reporter be so cocky?”
  • “He will be beaten down by some gangsters tomorrow on his way home.”
As Youku Buzz points out, many journalists in state-owned media across China see themselves as "kings without crowns" and this journalist probably saw himself as being on a mission from heaven.

Bureaucrats are the same all over. I guess as long as she is not corrupt, given the pathetic salary she is making a little fun time is harmless.

The reporter seems a little desperate for a story.

And... the moral of the story is... ? The journalist was wrong ? ^o)

They need to make a Chinese version of "The Office" and center it around a 2nd tier city government bureau.

Perhaps Suzhou or Shenyang (in keeping with the "S" tradition: Slough & Scranton)??

They could have filmed this in any gov't office in the USA, too.

Chinese version of "The Office" - jars after jars loose leaf tea.

The reporter did the right thing to expose these lazy civil servants. Fire those incompetent SOB including the MIC. Its time to get rid of the old furnitures. Survival of the fittest!
