References to communism, dissent in Obama speech censored by Chinese media (UPDATED with CCTV video)

If you were jam packed into Glamour Bar with 600 other people earlier this morning, watching President Barack Obama being sworn in, you might have been a little too dizzy with euphoria (and possibly heatstroke) to notice particular segments of his 18-minute inauguration address -- specifically, ones that likely caused the head honchos in Beijing to collectively cringe.

Remember how the new President mentioned "communism" and "facism" in the same sentence? Oh, and how those who silence dissent are "on the wrong side of history"? China's hoping its netizens won't, with various portals that translated Obama's address censoring various offending parts.

According to Reuters:

U.S. President Barack Obama's inauguration speech has a little twist in translations available on some Chinese websites where his references to communism and dissent have been cut.

Sina and Sohu had omitted the word “communism” (共产主义) in the line:

"Recall that earlier generations faced down communism and fascism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions,"

And removed an entire paragraph on dissent:

"To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."

Netease.com included the paragraph on dissent, and was reportedly commended by netizens for its honesty, but omitted the word "communism” in the prior paragraph. A quick Baidu search and browse found that other Chinese websites have chosen to post the speech in excerpts according to themes.

Only Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV has posted the translated speech in its entirety, which we include below so you can send to your friends.

UPDATE: Video showing how the live telecast of Obama's speech on CCTV was interrupted the moment the words "communism" and "fascism" were mentioned.

Yes, we marinate the pigs for you to eat!

nanheyangrouchuan boy,
dont be too sad for your beloved but departed step-dad who is said to be writing a book only for your type. be happy and hopeful that the day will soon come when yanks will call the black 'niga' and when the 44th elected will please you and launch a new war again.

It hurts the feelings of the Chinese people to be treated like brainless little automatons that cannot make decisions for themselves or discern the difference between seeking truth from facts and whitewash censorsip...

And I suppose you will not find censorship or cherry picking in the western media... same old... same old...

Weak reply that just doesn't hold up, CCP apologist...

The chinese like to be treated as such. And no, you won't find such cherry picking or censorship in the western media.

Badirty China.

Hahahahah! You are so funny. You might even be clever if you had a brain.

You might be considered as having half a brain but you lost that once you used the tired "Hahahah" that bedevils all you CCP, pro repression apologists.

I never claimed to have a brain. And I am not apologising neither, duh!

You want to love China long time..? Eat my pigs!

When did I apologise...???

And what is wrong with repression? Everyone needs a bit of repression... the Palestinians, Afghans, Iraqis.. otherwise the weapons industry will collapse! And China has such an affordable selection of weapons for everyone!

"According to the Chinese-language Ming Pao Daily News, a group of 22 mainland academics and lawyers launched a campaign last week under the slogan "Boycott CCTV, say no to brainwashing". The signatories have called on people "not to watch, visit the website, listen to and talk about [CCTV broadcasts]".

Strange...in the West you don't get academics and lawyers calling for the boycott of news organizations...

Unbelievable. And very sad.

Was there any need for CPC to do that?

Chomsky is off his rocker, writing anything for some publicity and probably has early stage Alzheimer's. He is a panda licking china expat's best friend.

Wow trolling the trolls.

600 people? There's something seriously wrong with a culture that voluntarily lines up to pay tribute to Caesar.

As one of the 600 there, this was a legitimate celebration of the end of an unfortunate era for our country and the hopeful beginning of a new one. Obama is not a Caesar but he does inherit an Empire. So did Gorbachev.

chinese should be grateful to the china hating nanheyangrouchuan and hundred thousands of expats who chose to live in china on their own will and make chinese not alone under fascist and communist rule. oh, how can i forget obama's brother who might be busy at moment applying for a chinese green card.

@ leastman

China can forget any remaining affection Africans have towards China, all of Africa is celebrating one of their sons in the White House...and so are native Americans, apparently Obama's mom was part of the Crow nation, making Obama a member as well.

China pales in comparison. Yes WE can, no YOU can't.

nanheyangrouchuan,
you are too dense to realize one single fact:
only 50% white americans voted in a 50% black who are 100% educated in white family and white back ground, after 230 years and 43 presidents. boy, you have nothing to feel proud of if not ashamed of. obama looks a angel only because bush is a devil and you have nothing to blow up for your offering since you are paying back the debt you owed to the whole world.

IMHO, the censored parts would not have touched the average Zhou in China.

The way it was censored certainly is a major, major embarrassment, making the rulers look weak and timid, and I could imagine that the official responsible for this will not have a bright future.

Chinese rulers are weak and timid, they can only wave their fists behind the PLA.

@ leastman It took alot of whites, not to mention asians, latinos and native americans to vote for Obama.
Your country is just an ugly, racist han junkyard.

^ actually its a blend of Han and mixed blodds that have lived under Han dominance so long many minoroty groups identity long died out minority groups and such are all blended into the label "Han". Just look at some surnames that really were not originally Han names, like the name Yang for example...

nanheyangrouchuan boy,
actually we have quite something in common. you're longing for the day when your rogue empire will bully around again, while i am looking forward to the time when i can 'bash' your evil neocon again.
fcuk your step-dad bushit!
