A Shanghai Evening News article, called “New Heroes Rush Into the Shanghai Bund, No Restrictions on Their Place of Origin, They are All Elites,” has drawn protest amongst Shanghai residents. One retired national leader even called the city's party secretary, Yu Zhengsheng, to complain.
After a discussion with Yu, Shanghai Evening News issued a statement yesterday over how the essay has “hurt the feelings of Shanghai readers.”
ESWN has posted a translation of the article, which sounds a little ramble-y and unfocused. Apparently it pokes fun at Shanghai city-dwellers' elitism and then delves into that always controversial topic: Chinese girls going for white guys.
