CCTV fire suspiciously absent from Chinese news

It's the morning after, and people in Beijing are reporting that last night's burning building, the TVCC Center right across from the main oddly-angled CCTV headquarters, has been put out. By people, we mean the twitterati, because most media organizations here aren't covering it (yet) at all.

According to Chinasmack, this notice went out to news websites, BBS and blogs. It's telling moderators to stop reporting on the CCTV fire, including posting no more pictures, videos and only using the officially sponsored Xinhua report.

At Netease, the comments have been "harmonized." Though there were 2000 plus comments last night, this morning it's been reduced to around 9.

We suppose the bad omen of having something that important to China's image to the world burn to a husk on 元宵夜 (The Lantern Festival) wasn't lost on the CCP. But is trying to sweep it all under a rug really the best solution? It's a building! Who has a rug that big?

They censor Netease but leave the censorship notice from kds alone...that is just weird censorship.

"Suspiciously absent"??? More like par for the course!

Seek truth from facts...

To answer your last question: Alanis Morissette

How strange! Everyone in Beijing can see it. By now, those who live in the neighbourhood have already told everyone they know and those people are in the process of telling everyone else. So much for the new media-saavy angle of the Propaganda Department. Aren't they supposed to be controlling the direction of news now instead of suppressing it?

Hey, not I am a bit ignorant on the architecture here. It looks like there are two towers and that both burned.

taihanasie: Not so strange considering this: most Beijingers know that hundreds died at the Tian'anmen massacre but the state media still universally declare that the indicent was solved "without a shot fired."

That CCTV building was going to be the location for a 300-room Mandarin Oriental hotel above the tv production studios. Would have been a sweet arrangement for the CCTV directors who are notorious for accepting sexual bribes from young wannabes.

did china's state media ever declare that "Tian'anme indicent" was solved "without a shot fired", a tragedy happened before you were born? it seems rumour has become truth to your type after being repeated a thousand times.

Eastman-san: To start, check the record of Mr. Yuan (袁木), CCP's ill-fated spokesman during that time. http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%A2%81%E6%9C%A8

Not knowing the fact - Ignorance.

Assuming that I was born after 1989 - Arrogance (or is that stupidity?)

ccyy boy,

the link you provided just prove ccp did admit 300 people'd been killed in tam incident, which just contradicted with your rumour that ccp "declare that the incident was solved without a shot fired". were all those deads including 3 dozen soldiers strangled by hands?
want to be a qualified rumour monger, you still have a long way to go. though i have no objection to your slapping your thick face, but first you should make it clear whether you want to ad for a sharp dagger which can penatrate anything or a strong shield which no dagger can cut thru.
as to fenqing thing, have to admit honestly my son used to be one about 5 years ago.

Actually it's been reported and CCTV staff took responsibility for setting off fire crackers when there was rule that say it shouldn't. In China, News take longer to get on air, that does not mean they don't report it. BBC screwed up badly when they were quick to jump on Chinese TV for not reporting the torch disturbances in Europe, but CCTV in fact did.

it's because all the cctv production equipment was being temporarily stored there, i thought everyone already knew this

Typical sensationalism! That 'message' did not originate from Chinasmack. Chinasmack copied it from some KDS forum. The poster admitted that he copied it from godknowswhere on the internet.

So what is the level of legitimacy of that message? Considering, I saw reports on Monday night and Tuesday call day) of the fire people are just over zealous.

What do you mean, "some KDS forum"? KDS is the online gathering point for most of Shanghai (the Shanghainese-speaking ones + some others, but no expats yet).

I am sure with that kind of authority the notice must be authentic then!?!
