Super fast internet coming to Shanghai this year

fiberopticcable.jpg Avid Youtube watchers rejoice, the days you struggled against the slow crawl of the Chinese Internet may soon be a relic of the past! Shanghai's Science and Technology Commission announced that the city will be getting an Internet service 50 to 100 times faster than current speeds sometime this year.

The technology, called 3TNET, has a speed of about 100Mbps and has already been beta tested by 30,000 families in Changning and Jiading. The company responsible for building the 3TNET network will be rolling it out to all of Shanghai's 18 districts and Chongming County this year.

We can't wait for the day when we can show our friends an “otters holding hands” video and not wait twenty minutes for it to load.

Unfortunately the higher internet speed likely won't have an impact on YouTube or any other foreign-hosted sites. Only Chinese sites will load more quickly, all the others data will still have to go through the Great Firewall bottleneck.
