- Japanese department store giant to open 1st outlet in Shanghai [Xinhua] Japan's department store giant Takashimaya Co. will open its first Chinese outlet in Shanghai in 2012. Takashimaya will become the second Japanese department store operator after Isetan Co., a unit of Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd., to open stores in China to sustain growth while demand at home kept sagging."

The policy, announced yesterday, marks the first time Shanghai has clearly spelled out the requirements to approve a permanent resident."
- Fog plays havoc with city's ports [Eastday] Fog caused by rainy weather since mid-February has disrupted international shipping services around ports in Shanghai, authorities said yesterday. About 100 international ships delayed or canceled exit or entry plans at the port areas of Wusong, Waigaoqiao and Yangshan yesterday morning, Shanghai Immigration Frontier Defense General Station said. This is the sixth such disruption this month.
- China's Tibetan areas not celebrating the new year [AP] Only a handful of pilgrims gathered here last weekend at the historic Labrang monastery, normally bustling before the Tibetan New Year. The Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader, called this week on Tibetans to skip festivities surrounding the new year, which begins Wednesday, saying they would be inappropriate after the Chinese government's heavy-handed crackdown on the protests. Tibetans across the region say they are still in mourning.
