CCTV says no to commie homo-loving sons of guns

Even as the dust settles over last week's Academy Awards, anti-censorship advocates and gay activists across Asia continue to lambast their local television stations for the censorship of two 'Milk' acceptance speeches — one made by Sean Penn, winner of the Best Actor award, and the other by Dustin Lance Black, who picked up the award for Best Original Screenplay. Both speeches were heavily censored in 53 countries all over Asia from India to Singapore and Hong Kong.

Over here in China, thanks to our media minders who work round the clock to protect us from the spiritual pollution from the west, here's what CCTV viewers missed out on in the screening of the Oscars:

  • Two gay kisses were edited out.
  • Dustin Lance Black's heartfelt and emotional personal story of how Milk's life gave him hope never saw the light of day.
  • The first line in Sean Penn's acceptance speech, "You commie homo-loving sons of guns" was translated as " 你们可真够宽容的" ("You guys are so generous") — which is quite a stretch from what Penn actually said [see video above]. Black and White Cat notes the poor translator probably either didn't understand what was being said or didn't have enough time to find out, but probably took his chances by making things up because translating a line that linked communism with 'homo-loving' would probably have dire consequences for him.
  • Sean Penn's challenge to Prop 8 supporters to rethink their positions was sanitised and twisted into just one line, “每个人都有平等权利” ("Everyone has equal rights")
The message is now being circulated on at least one gay website to flood CCTV's mailbox with complaint letters.

And for all you commie homo-loving sons of guns, both speeches are available here in all their uncensored glory.

Eastman simply cannot help wearing his patriot-Chinese rear end over his head.

  • nanheyangrouchuan

Eastman is living in denial and in the closet.

    nanheyangrouchuan boy,

i clearly remember you hate homosexual more than your dad.

Oh come on, put some effort into your response!

why care about chinese acceptance of Sean Penn? he is known maybe only by 1%.

most important is how his folks are treating him, especially when he visited iraq before the war. americans really have a pretty short memory span, not only about him but also about themselves.

  • McLustin

Do you EVER get the point? It's not about Chinese acceptance of Sean Penn. It's about Chinese acceptance of homosexuals.

  • BOSOX

I am no commie-homo-loving son of a gun, but I have to say the translation was pretty accurate. It did reflect Sean's surprise stemming from his own acknowledgment that he makes it hard for people to appreciate him. Gays across China ought to lay off on this one, and so should gay right activists. 宽容 means tolerance (again, very accurate according to his message in the speech). Isn't that what we all want?

  • little Alex

Oh, come on. With Penn's admitting that it could be difficult to appreciate him in the next sentence, you know that the current translation would make it seem like Penn was thanking Hollywood for being tolerant of Penn himself, not the gay community.

  • McLustin

That's a stretch, but even if it's true, it doesn't explain the kisses that were edited out, or the deletion of Black's story.

  • quantumcooney

Gays ought to be tolerant of the government's intolerance for them, is what you're saying?

Wow. Good thing you weren't leading any civil rights movements.

  • theSeth

    Three questions for you

1)Who was Sean Penn talking to, was he talking to the academy or the community at large? or was he was talking to the CCTV?

2)Should you be thankful for other people being tolerance?

3)And ask yourself whether you should be tolerant? and see how many supporters you get if you sons of guns have a revolution in US or China.

    Get real!
