Live Music This Weekend: Young Knives, Oliver, and girls, girls, girls
This week's big music story in Shanghai has clearly been the Oasis debacle (even if some people insist on misreporting it). Local music hacks have really gone to town on the British theme, cracking out puns like they were auditioning for a job with The Sun and even indulging in some classic tabloid-style "exclusive" wars and bitchiness.
Never mind all that though. We told you last week that there was some great live music coming up and we like to think, rather smugly, that this weekend proves our point
.
Tonight
Ashby-de-la-Zouch's finest Young Knives kick things off down at the Dream Factory tonight. Labelled in some quarters as "geek rock", we reckon the best way to think of them is a bit like Franz Ferdinand, but, y'know, good. Showing that Shanghai can rock just as hard as a small market town in Leicestershire, will be Boys Climbing Ropes and Sonnet - making for a great line-up.
¥120, 9pm. Zhijiang Dream Factory, 4/F, Building B, No. 28 Yuyao Lu, near Xikang Lu. 余姚路28号B4楼, 近西康路.
Looking for something a little heavier? YYT has the answer with Hangzhou's hard rock heroes October Capricorn and local hell-raisers Six Shot and Chaos Mind.
¥30, 9pm, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路).
Saturday
Saturday sees Beijing Brit-poppers Oliver hit LOgO with support from the reformed and revamped Banana Monkey as well as Led Zep cover band The Rovers. While Oliver are building a reputation up in the capital, this show will also be interesting to track Banana Monkey's progress following their long lay off and their new sound.
¥30, 10pm, 13 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu. 幸福路13号, 近法华镇路.
Down at YYT meanwhile, the always worth watching Pinkberry will be supporting fellow pop-punks Reflector.
¥50, 9pm, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路).
Sunday
Rounding out a full weekend of quality live music, YYT celebrates International Women's Day with a string of top female-led bands - Bang Bang Tang, Momo, and Candy Shop being the pick of them. Indie-pop outfit Bang Bang Tang were one of the artists featured on Neocha's fantastic free compilation album of female vocalists Tomorrow's Afternoon Tea, and will provide a great way to see out your weekend.
¥30, 7pm, 1731 Yan'an Xi Lu (entrance on Kaixuan Lu), 延安西路1731号 (入口在凯旋路).
