  • Tibet's Tense Anniversary [Council on Foreign Relations] "China views Tibet as a backward, feudal, and superstitious society, which has progressed democratically and economically under Chinese rule. Yet human rights watchdog groups regularly cite Chinese abuses in Tibet."
  • Lhasa peaceful and quiet on major Tibet anniversary [Xinhua] "The holy city of Lhasa was quiet and peaceful Tuesday, the day marking 50 years since Tibet's democratic reform and the 14th Dalai Lama's flee from his homeland... The life of the average Tibetans seems unaffected even under close watch by foreign press on this special date. There are as many taxies, pedicabs and buses on the roads as usual. Taxi and pedicab drivers, mostly migrants from the neighboring Sichuan Province and central Henan Province, would slam the horn when they saw a potential passenger at roadside."
  • Heavy security as Tibetans mark Dalai Lama's exile [Reuters] "China tightened security across ethnic Tibetan areas on Tuesday, aiming to head off potential unrest on the sensitive 50th anniversary of a failed uprising that prompted the Dalai Lama's flight into exile."
  • Hu calls for Great Wall of stability in Tibet [Xinhua] "Chinese President Hu Jintao called for the building of a Great Wall of stability in Tibet here on Monday, prior to the 50th anniversary of the foiling of an armed rebellion led by the Dalai Lama's supporters. Hu stressed the necessity to promote development and stability in Tibet when joining a panel discussion with deputies of the National People's Congress (NPC) from the Tibet Autonomous Region."
  • China has killed 'hundreds of thousands of Tibetans': Dalai Lama [AFP] "Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Tuesday accused China of having killed hundreds of thousands of his people and transforming his Himalayan homeland into a "hell on earth." "These 50 years have brought untold suffering and destruction to the land and people of Tibet," the Dalai Lama said in a message marking the 50th anniversary of a failed Tibetan uprising against China."
  • Tibetans are unhappy when Dalai Lama tells lies [Xinhua] "To Tibetan car dealer Purbu, the Dalai Lama always seems unhappy when Tibetans are really happy. When knowing the recent claim of the monk that Tibetans are becoming more unhappy about the government, Purbu scorned "it is all imaginary and false." ... To Purbu, what is more important behind the figures is the truth he witnesses every day that every Tibetan shares the fruits of the robust economic growth, a dream their ancestors could hardly imagine in the times of the Dalai Lama, when more than 90 percent of the Tibetan population were slaves or serfs."

The Dolly Lama should stop making false allegations unless he can offer some solid proof. And he can't. The Dolly made a similar but false allegation to Le Monde during the Olympics when he was meeting Sarko's wife, saying Chinese security forces killed hundreds of Tibetans in Kham. He later had to retract his statements. No wonder China will not talk to a buffoon like him.

And Xinhua and the rest of the chinese propaganda machine should stop rehashing the same tired "facts" about tibet and try presenting some real arguments. oh wait...they don't have any.

free northern ireland and boycott london olympic.

Too bad China is such party poopers but clamping down on Tibetan party err... protests.

if China were a small country, Dalie Lama would have prevailed in his agenda with support from those gullible and ignorant westerners who know little about Tibet and think they are the saver and angel of this world. Dalie Lama is opportunist. He always counts on western support. Western support would work very well to coerce a small country like Yugoslavia. but unfortunately that's not the case for China. Being used as a pawn is not a good feeling for everyone

I think it is really interesting to see these conflicting reports. I definitely think that is a sign that no one outside of the country really knows what is going on there, and I don't trust the sources coming out of China or Tibet reporting on the story. This video features sources from all around the world talking about the Dalai Lama's accusation of calling Tibet 'hell on earth'- http://tinyurl.com/aey9gw. They have a quote from a state-run media outlet saying Tibetans are happy, but all the rest comment on the oppression of the Tibetan people. There are so many contradictory reports, how do we decide what is true?
