We all presumed that the one-child policy was going to lead to an aging population, but there’s nothing like actual numbers to prove it: 96,700 babies were born in Shanghai last year, while 107,000 people died, according to an official report.
The China Daily article added that the number of childbearing women is going down and the number of people over 60 is going up. By 2025, they’re expected to make up one third of Shanghai’s population.
Obviously, there will be problems with the city’s welfare system and with getting enough labor to keep Shanghai going, but what we’re most worried about is the threat posed by armies of elderly tai chi masters, who may one day decide to take over the city in fearsome slow-motion.
