Jilin policewoman saves suicide jumper from the brink

A policewoman daringly rescued a would-be suicide case yesterday in a surprisingly well photographed incident in Changchun City, Jilin.

A young woman had climbed to the top of a 6-story residential building and began standing at the edge of the roof, threatening to commit suicide. When she threw her cellphone down the six flights, onlookers called in the police.

The policewoman went to the roof and began talking to the girl in an attempt to persuade her away from the ledge.

According to the policewoman:

[The jumper] said she was only 18 years old and working at a restaurant. Her boss treated her unfairly because of some cellphone issue and also withheld her residency permit from her. She took it very hard and climbed to the rooftop...

I tried to talk her into coming down at first, but she refused. I then threw her my jacket, hoping that when she donned it, I could take the opportunity to seize her, but she ignored the clothing. Later, when she complained that she had no money, I threw her my purse.

I said that if money could solve the problem, she could take the money in the purse. I would even give her my back card - I told her the password. She still didn't act.

After over an hour, the girl agreed to come down safely if all the police and firefighters left the area. However, when they did, she still refused to come down.

About two hours into the incident, the girl finally made a leap for it. The policewoman quickly grabbed her and held her dangling in mid-air. Two other Changchun officers then rushed over to help pull her back to safety.

The crowd watching the event unfolding broke into applause.

After an almost endless swarm of less than stellar police news, it's refreshing (if a little suspiciously too well documented) to see a story about authorities actually doing something good. Apparently Netease thinks so too, because it ran an interview piece with the policewoman (they're calling her the Police Flower 警花） almost right after.
