Dell throws their hat in the China Smartphone Mess

Dell Smartphone.jpg With major companies all hoping to attract China's massive customer base, especially the burgeoning middle class, the Chinese next-gen phone market is getting a bit crowded all of a sudden.

Besides Apple and Lenovo, it looks like Dell is supposedly now in talks with China Mobile to offer a smart phone starting in August.

From PC World:

The world's number two PC vendor has strongly hinted it plans to offer a smartphone or mobile Internet device, but it has not given any details or said if it will offer such a product in China.

Dell is waiting for China Mobile to pick one or two models from smartphones it has offered and the two firms could reach a deal around August, Zhang Jun, an analyst at research firm Wedge MKI, said in a phone interview.

A Dell smartphone could then hit the Chinese market by the end of the year, Zhang said.

It's hard to believe, even if the deal doesn't fall through (like many Chinese carrier plus next-gen phone deals before it), that Dell's foray will make much impact in the cellphone market.

According to Barron's, Dell's smartphone already failed in the U.S., because carriers didn't consider it a good enough phone to compete against the other, more famous next-gen phones.

Considering it's competition in "almost being released smartphones" is the Apple iPhone and its China-only semi-clone, the Lenovo oPhone - we're almost completely sure we'll never hear anyone say "Dude, you're getting a Dell (phone)."
