It's crazy right? Not to say that Shanghai isn't in a charitable mood most of the time, but this is the first instance we've seen of an entire three day stretch dedicated to not one... not two... but four FIVE different charitable events. It's as if the charity heavens opened up and decided this weekend was the day to rain torrents of giving.
So, in case your do-good quota needed a little bit of a boost, here's how you can help everything from poor, abandoned pets to trees in Inner Mongolia to survivors of Wenchuan.
FRIDAY, APRIL 17
To start off your weekend, check out the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, who are twirling their pompoms and doing the kick-step for a slightly worthier cause than throwing the ol' pigskin around: Roots & Shoots. The entry fee is 150RMB for 4 drinks, and all proceeds from the door will go to Jane Goodall's charitable organization.
7pm to 10pm. Zapata's Bar and Grill, 5 Hengshan Lu near Dongping Lu 衡山路5号
SATURDAY, APRIL 18
The next day, shake off the wild with a stroll through the Eco Design Fair at mix-used warehouse ANKEN Green. Over 30 eco-conscious businesses and groups will be showcasing their products, which include organic clothing, home accessories, health products and food. Net proceeds from the fair will go to... Roots & Shoots. Yes, you get the chance to donate to Roots & Shoots TWICE in one week. Those trees in Inner Mongolia are going to be psyched! Free admission.
10am to 5pm. ANKEN Green, 668 Huaian Lu near South Suzhou Creek Lu, 淮安路668号,近南苏州路
SUNDAY, APRIL 19
Get a double dose of feel-goodiness on Sunday. First, start your day off cooing over the cutest little animals in need of homes you'll ever see. Second Chance Animal Aid, one of the few animal organizations in Shanghai, is willing to set you up with the perfect pet.
12pm to 3pm. O'Malley's Irish Pub, 42 Taojiang Lu, Changning near Hengshan Lu, 桃江路42号 近衡山路
And then head over to the Shelter (it's really close by!) to take part in a day of flea market finds and thumping beats by Shanghai's own DJ group, The Lab. All proceeds from the door charge and 10% of the flea market proceeds will go to an New York University student-led group that's planning on helping with reconstruction efforts in Sichuan. The devastating earthquake left nearly 5 million homeless, and a year on, they still need all the help they can get. Door entry fee is 20RMB.
2pm to late. The Shelter, 5 Yongfu Lu near Fuxing Xi Lu, 永福路5号
We almost forgot - High school kids around Shanghai are doing their part this weekend too, with a battle of the bands at Candy Club. Help support our 13 to 18-year-old artists as they rock out to earn funds for the charity Dorje, a on-religious, non-profit, non-political organization dedicated to improving and providing health care in rural Sichuan. All of the 50RMB entrance fee will be going to Dorje's Clinics for a Thousand Villages project.
1pm to 6pm. Candy Club, 570 Huaihai Xi Lu near Hongqiao Lu. 淮海西路570号近虹桥路
