Maybe it's our own affinity for gender bending antics, but we're kind of liking this internet criminal from Nanjing who managed to swindle away 500,000RMB from an unsuspecting web user. Going by the name “Nine-tailed fox,” 21-year-old Fangwei made friends with a lonely 39-year-old man over QQ, China's most popular instant messaging service.
The two talked for a while until Fangwei finally sent the man (who used the pseudonym “Wang Bing”) pictures. Wang Bing was excited to see that Fangwei was an absolutely stunning young woman, with long hair, a slim build and big, expressive eyes.
Wang Bing quickly arranged for the two of them to meet in Nanjing. When she appeared, she was even prettier in person. She introduced herself as someone working in the garment industry - she was living in Suzhou but had a clothing shop in Shanghai. When they parted, she asked for a 5000RMB “parting gift.” The poor sucker immediately went to the bank and withdrew 5000RMB for her.
Over the course of five months, he spent more than 50,000RMB on her.
Then one day in March, some snitch called Wang Bing from Nanjing to tell him that Fangwei didn't own a company at all, and was just a scammer looking to cheat him out of more money. Alarmed, Wang Bing called the police. It was only after the police got involved that Wang Bing realized Fangwei was...
...a dude.
Another snitch soon told the police: "Yep, Fangwei really is a dude, but he likes to dress as a girl online to cheat people... I've known him for about four years now. He'll go out to the bars and party every day - sometimes posing as a guy and sometimes as a girl. He loves to live a life of luxury and will go to the most expensive bars, hotels and shops..."
Unfortunately for Fangwei, the cops caught up with him in Suzhou. In an interview with reporters, he insisted that Wang Bing had given him all that money because he liked "her." The reporter couldn't help but issue a snooty aside "well, if he liked you so much, why would he report you?"
Come on, snooty reporter. Everybody knows the golden rule for gold digging is maintaining the illusion that there will be sexy times in the future. That's kind of hard to do once you're outed as a guy.
