Already established in the Detroit art scene, Sara Blakeman’s first show in China is a promising start of things to come for the Shanghai art scene from the petite American. Aptly named, Dance This Mess Around, the exhibition showcases cutesy paper constructions, embodying Blakeman’s self described “wonder and frustrations” with China:
“China has tested my creative process. I embrace some aspects and struggle with others, and I’ve transformed this wonder and frustration into paper construction. I've used Chinese traditional auspicious motifs as a starting point. They permeate and combine with my own visual vocabulary and fetishes (candy, the “culture of cute”, science fiction) to create a diorama of charms that is both a dance of good luck and a ritual for processing and surrendering to the impact of Chinese culture.”
If you’re interested in non-mainstream art and have an appreciation for detail, head to AM Space to see Blakeman’s work. Besides it being a fun exhibition, the gallery space itself is well worth a look-see.
