Anyone taking a stroll down Taojiang Lu towards Hengshan Lu is bound to spot the bright green shutters of 'The Cottage', a new coffee shop at number 25a.
This place is very newly opened (just over two weeks) and has views onto a private garden at the back. Inside are PCs with free internet, reasonably priced food (30rmb panini) and drinks (28rmb cappuccino), and bags of charm.
It's also chock-full of interesting stuff, most of which is for sale: photos, 7" singles, second hand books, condoms and vintage clothes. The proprietor, Lao Mai (Old Mike), said many of the eclectic mishmash of objects were things he had bought or collected over the years. Others are goods he had found interesting enough to source - he especially likes anything that's fun, got a unique construction and is rare or one of a kind.
We think if you're in the French Concession, this is one coffee shop that is well worth a visit.
